Question

Help placing image in Word header

Asked by: isaacr25

I have a full page image that I need to use for letterhead. I've tried inserting the image into the header of the Microsoft Word document. I can't get anything to work as needed (alignment etc).

What is the best way to create a Word letterhead document with a full page image?

Thanks.

This has always been a difficult task in Word and one that Wordperfect has excelled in. But, don't give up.

Try this:

Let me know if this works for you.

It isn't really all that difficult DaveG.

The link you provided shows a method to insert a smaller-than-full page image, but similar steps can be used for a full-page image: just place your image within a 1st page header (as they suggest), then use Format Picture to size and position it relative to the upper left (0,0).

I'd use an image just slightly larger than the paper size and use negative values (say -0.1") to cause the image to bleed off the edges (assuming a printer that could deal with no border printing).

I'd also recommend use the Insert as link option to get the image in as a linked graphic (rather than the basic Insert which embeds it): this way, the file size is dramatically smaller, and I can change the image by simply replacing it with a new one. This is handy for letterhead where the content may change frequently, such as in a legal or architecture office where principal names change. It also allows you to set up a single template that has links to a generic image that can be different in each instance.

Eric,
I tried this method, and it worked, except that the embedded image was way lighter than the original image when I exited the header-edit mode.

Yes, the screen "Print View" display shows any header/footer lighter by design -- presumably to differentiate it from the body text. However, it will show normally in Print Preview, and will print properly.

Be sure to try a test to see the difference in document size between and embedded image and a liked image: it is very dramatic in Word 2003, although I gather it is somewhat less of an issue in Word 2007.

Another advantage of using a linked image is that you can have different versions of the same image using different resolutions for various printers. For an office printer, use a low-res version that won't wast a lot of ink; for a corporate laser printer, a higher res image would be better. A relative link pointing to a file (i.e. image/CorpIdentity.jpg) would then pull in the image document at whatever resolution was appropriate.
