Word document only opens with file/open, not doubleclick and can't be opened from Outlook 2007

After upgrading a user from Office 2003 to 2007 Pro the user can't open a word attachment from an email. It just opens a blank word document. If the user saves the document and then double clicks the document then it still only opens a blank document. The file can  be opened by opening word and then use file - open command. I have associated the .doc and .docx with word 2007. The OS is XP Pro sp3 and the pc is on a domain. Thanks for any ideas!

Could be a couple of things.

1. Try:

Hit Start-Run and type:
winword.exe /regserver

2. This may sound crazy but I had some strange things happen to my PC after I upgraded to SP3 (running XP Pro also).  I didn't realize some of the weirdness was related to SP3. I think if you do some research you'll find that SP3 has some major conflicts.  Maybe removing SP3 and then going back to step 1 will work if it didn't work the 1st time.

Also verify your settings:

Open any folder (my computer if you want) then go to Tools --> Folder Options --> File Types (tab) -->
(type in "DOC" and it should bring you to that file extension) once there, click on "Advanced".

Under the "Actions" section, double click ok "Open" (should be in bold).
Once there, make sure all these settings are the same:

&Open

Application used to perform action:
"C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office12\WINWORD.exe" /n /dde

Use DDE (checked)

DDE Message:
[REM _DDE_Direct][FileOpen("%1")]

Application:

I registered the service as the above post and checked all of the file types settings. I can now open a .docx attachemnt and also open .docx file by double clicking it but when I try to open a .doc file I get several error boxes. file can not be found (c:\documents.doc) nad other similar erors all with a different path. the last error is usually the correct path but then a blank word page opens up. I have not do an uninstall on sp3 yet.

Also, see if you can open word and create a document and save it as a .doc (older version).  You should see compatibility mode enabled.  Take a look here: http://office.microsoft.com/en-us/word/HA100444751033.aspx

Problem has become worse. can't edit any word document. Also, can't get into options. had to uninstall word 2007 and install word 2003 and now everything works. plan to do a format and reinstall as problem must be associated with user profile now.

I would agree with your last comment. If you were able to remove 07 successfully and install 03 and everything works you have some profile conflict. Before doing format and reinstall try creating new user profile and only install 07 for that user profile. See if problem persists. Then it's more than a profile issue.  Have you tried using Microsoft Live Documents or Doogle Docs instead of installing the software. Might be an easier solution, heck even OpenOffice.org works great if you can get away from MS.  Best of Luck.
