Also verify your settings:
Open any folder (my computer if you want) then go to Tools --> Folder Options --> File Types (tab) -->
(type in "DOC" and it should bring you to that file extension) once there, click on "Advanced".
Under the "Actions" section, double click ok "Open" (should be in bold).
Once there, make sure all these settings are the same:

Could be a couple of things.
1. Try:
Hit Start-Run and type:
winword.exe /regserver
2. This may sound crazy but I had some strange things happen to my PC after I upgraded to SP3 (running XP Pro also). I didn't realize some of the weirdness was related to SP3. I think if you do some research you'll find that SP3 has some major conflicts. Maybe removing SP3 and then going back to step 1 will work if it didn't work the 1st time.
