Question

copy table2 from word doc2, join to table1 in word doc1, save updated word doc1

Asked by: nastd

I have tables in two separate word docs, need to join them using code in a basic macro, and save the document with the joined tables.  The tables have equal numbers of columns.  When I do this manually I get a perfect join, and the columns in the pasted table assume the width of the table being joined to.   This is exactly what I want to happen.   But that outcome seems contingent on using the mouse to select the activation icon just above/left of the copied table, then copy, then place cursor just below the other table, and paste.   If I try to record this to see how to code it, it won't work because you can't record the mouse.  And no matter how I select the table I wish to copy and paste, if I use the cursor,  I don't get a clean join.  Sometimes the table don't join at all, and in the  best case scenario the columns do not align.   Another point of contention is that when  I do the paste I am going to have to put the cursor below the table, but I can't do that without knowing where the cursor is initialized to when I open the document.   I would like code that joins the table and makes the pasted table assume the col widths of the table being joined to.....

This Word macro works ion the first table in each of two documents already opin in Word.

Sub JoinTables()
    Dim DocA As Document
    Dim DocB As Document
    Dim rng As Range
    Dim tbl As Table
    Dim r As Integer
    Dim cl As Cell

    Set DocA = Documents(1)
    Set DocB = Documents(2)
    Set tbl = DocA.Tables(1)
    Set rng = tbl.Range
    rng.Collapse wdCollapseEnd
    DocB.Tables(1).Range.Copy
    rng.Paste
    For r = 2 To tbl.Rows.Count
        tbl.Rows(r).LeftIndent = tbl.Rows(1).LeftIndent
        For Each cl In tbl.Rows(1).Cells
            tbl.Rows(r).Cells(cl.ColumnIndex).Width = cl.Width
        Next cl
    Next r

End Sub

This is promising, but the problem is that after the rng.paste,  tb1.Rows.count "has no object"..... I don't understand why this is, unless the fact that tb1 is configued to be a fixed header on every page once the tables are joined is causing a problem..... I tried re-asserting set tb1 = docA.Tables(1) before the loop, but no dice....

No, the problem is not that the table being joined to was set to repeat as a header on each page, since I removed that feature and tb1.rows.count still is "run time error 424, object required".

uh....the "no object" was due to a typo which I probably introduced myself..... standby....
