How do you create a standard outline (I., A., 1., a., (1)., (a).) using OpenOffice Writer 3.0.1 or higher?
This is apparently a difficult thing to do. In MS Word 2003 or earlier, this is a relatively simple task. AM I MISSING SOMETHING OBVIOUS? I must be.
In Word, you basically performed this task by doing the following numbered steps.
(1) Put Word into outline mode (or whatever it was called), by clicking 1 menu item.
(2) Start your outline, and, if I recall, at least partially complete at least a row or two.
(3) Highlight the entire outline.
(4) Do some task, which is like a menu click and interaction with a simple dialog box away, to add the numbers in whatever format you choose. As I said above, I'd go with I., A., 1., a., (1)., (a).
(5) Done, or you can then play around with the character and paragraph formatting as desired, which in my case I like to do to homogenize.
CAN YOU DO, MORE OR LESS, THOSE STEPS USING OPENOFFICE WRITER?
All of the instructions I keep seeing are about Styles (and friggin complicated), and it looks like you can do every numbering scheme EXCEPT the standard, outline sequence of [Roman Numeral ] I., A., [Arabic Numeral] 1., a., (1)., (a).

Sorry, you can get the brackets use the before and after boxes to add the symbols you require.

Select the text.
Right click on the selection.
Click on "Numbering/bullets".
You get a dialogue box.
Select "Options" tab.
Select the format you require for each level.
You can choose at least the first four levels as you require, not sure about 5 & 6.
