Question

WordPerfect Office 12 Install upon starting computer

Asked by: Michelle_Public

System Win XP

I installed ituens 7.0 yesterday and it messed up my computer -- so I installed itunes 6 but now I get other error messages  -- I tried to do a restore but I am unable to restore to a prior date other than Jan 1, 2007. I am getting a Sonic Error which I was in the process of fixing and now when I boot up It says Windows Instillation and then it tries to look for the WordPerfect Office 12 disc -- which appears until I cancel several times and then it goes into the Sonic Error - I am only able to get past these if I do a ctrl/alt/delete -- I have tried several things to get the sonic error off and now I get 2 errors -- i removed the sonic stuff from the add/remove along with Roxio and I just went into a WP forum and tried a bunch of stuff -- I removed the WordPerfect 12 from my system as I never use it and tried to get rid of the associated files but I still get the error message -- I am not sure what to do at this point -- thanks

Try a Registry repair program.  Various ones are available at sites like download.com.

by: moorhouselondonPosted on 2007-01-03 at 07:43:45ID: 18235944

Press Start, All Programs, Startup.  What programs are in there?  Getting rid of any that you do not want to startup automatically will help focus on where the problem is.  (In general, you should be able to delete everything in there).  Then Restart the pc.

by: moorhouselondonPosted on 2007-01-03 at 07:52:03ID: 18236041

Another thing to do is to Run Regedit (be very careful doing this as messing with the Registry can make the problem worse - always take a backup of the Registry first).

Look in the following sections:-

Hkey Current User, Software, Microsoft, Windows, CurrentVersion, Run
Hkey Current User, Software, Microsoft, Windows, CurrentVersion, RunOnce
Hkey Local Machine, Software, Microsoft, Windows, CurrentVersion, Run
Hkey Local Machine, Software, Microsoft, Windows, CurrentVersion, RunOnce

What do you have in these sections that is to do with WordPerfect, Sonic or Itunes?

You should be able to delete entries that mention these things, but only in these four places!  If in doubt, please post what you see.

thanks -- I will check on these tonight and follow up

ok -- first I deleted everything in the start -- then per khobson I went to downloads.com and got registry mechanic and actually purchased it to finish out running all of the files -- I am not sure how to run regedit -- but I am open to that because I still get the Windows Install that turns into the WordPerfect Office 12 thing that I click through to the Sonic error -- so any feedback is helpful -- thanks

Press the Start button then, on the right hand column that pops up you will see Run...  Choose that, type

regedit

into the box, then press the Enter key.  In WindowsXP this will put you into the middle of the Registry somewhere. but if you pull the slider to the right of the left hand pane up to the top then you can see the structure more clearly.

As mentioned earlier, take a backup of the Registry first by pulling down the File menu, choose Export, then it will ask you for a filename.  IMPORTANT:  Save the file in the root directory (e.g., C:\somename), cos if you need to get it back, it is in an easy to find place.  The default place of saving is in My Documents, but this is buried deep in the directory structure of the pc.

Here is the only thing in the Registry Editor -- :(

Hkey Current User, Software, Microsoft, Windows, CurrentVersion, Run - ther is only (Default) Rez_SZ (value not set
Logitech Software -- WPSched4 (which is my stats program  (Yahoo Pager)
Hkey Current User, Software, Microsoft, Windows, CurrentVersion, RunOnce -  ther is only (Default) Rez_SZ
Hkey Local Machine, Software, Microsoft, Windows, CurrentVersion, Run (Default)
Hkey Local Machine, Software, Microsoft, Windows, CurrentVersion, RunOnce -  (Default)/acrobat/adobe verion cue/Apoint/Del QUickset/DMSLauncher/Goodlge Desktop/Intel Wireless/ISUSPM Startup/ISUSScheduler/LogitechVideoRe.../LogitechVideoTray/LVCOMSX/MSKDetctor/NvCplDameon/nxiz/Quicktime Task/RealTray/Registry Mechanic/SlowLOMControl/SunJavaUpdates/YCentral

by: moorhouselondonPosted on 2007-01-06 at 08:50:04ID: 18258521

That big list of things starting with acrobat: normally I would expect to find these things under the Run key, not the RunOnce key?  (Don't move them, but can you confirm that you mean RunOnce and not Run please).

I don't much like the look of nxiz.  Is there a key called nxiz?  If so, it looks like your pc might be infected with Spyware or similar.

Call me old fashioned, but I don't like programs like Registry Mechanic.  This could have a retrograde effect on your pc.  I would be inclined to uninstall it.

Is SlowLOMControl the correct spelling?  I don't know what that is at all.  Everything else makes reasonable sense.

by: moorhouselondonPosted on 2007-01-06 at 08:53:30ID: 18258531

Ah, I have just seen khobson's recommendation (egg on face to me!!).  If that was added after the problem manifested itself then that is not what caused the problem.

by: moorhouselondonPosted on 2007-01-06 at 08:58:35ID: 18258552

I would delete the nxiz key, shut the pc down.  Start it up again and look for nxiz again, or something similar (random characters) in the same section of the registry.  If it reappears then you are going to have to download something like AVG.

free.grisoft.com

Install it, get the updates, then shut the pc down.  Upon starting up, keep tapping the F8 key until you get a menu.  Choose Safe Mode from that menu.  The screen will appear but look a bit weird, don't worry about that.  Double click on the AVG icon and do a complete scan of your hard drive.  Did it find anything?

by: Michelle_PublicPosted on 2007-01-06 at 09:32:46ID: 18258658

sorry -- to the first comment you are right -- they are under the run -- working on the rest of the stuff

by: Michelle_PublicPosted on 2007-01-06 at 09:44:35ID: 18258703

I deleted the nxiz thing -- and it did not appear when I rebooted -- I also saw Sonic in the Software -- so I deleted those folders from both locations -- but no luck -- should I download that AVG thing?

by: moorhouselondonPosted on 2007-01-06 at 09:54:49ID: 18258741

Ity doesn't look to me as if there is an AntiVirus program on the pc, so yes I think it is a good idea.

When you say you tried to get rid of the files, was there a problem in deleting the WordPerfect folder?  (Found under Program Files).  If so, then when you are in Safe Mode running AVG, try again - it will delete this time round.  (I'm assuming you have nothing you need in the WordPerfect folders that you need).

by: Michelle_PublicPosted on 2007-01-06 at 12:19:26ID: 18259266

ok -- so I am not sure what happened -- but Word Perfect appeared back in the programs file and i a can not remove the program -- I receive this error Error 1316. A Newtowr error occurred while attemtpint to read the file C:\Windows\Installer\SetupWP.msi
Then I press ok and it exits out of there so that I can not remove it -- I have removed this program before and the folder in the Program Files directory and I am not sure how it got there again -- thanks

by: moorhouselondonPosted on 2007-01-06 at 12:37:17ID: 18259329

Newtowr error?

Makes a change from the normal error messages I see (lol).

In Safe Mode, go into Windows Explorer and delete the Program Files\WordPerfect folder.  It should let you do that in Safe Mode.  If it doesn't then go back into Regedit.  Go to the very top of the tree and search for this string:-

setupwp

Delete any occurences you see.  (Be careful though, I am not sure whether WebPosition might use this string somewhere).

by: Michelle_PublicPosted on 2007-01-06 at 12:38:38ID: 18259334

OK -- I made some progress -- so I went online and I typed in SetupWP and it took me to http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?kbid=295823 and I downloaded the exe file -- and I removed the WordPerfect 12 and Sonic -- and it worked when I rebooted the installer disappeared!!! I will keep you posted

Thanks for the points, it has to be said though that it was you who resolved the problem by downloading msicuu2.exe.
