Question

Unable to open a RTF file from Internet Explorer in Word Perfect

Asked by: weiroblpay

I have a Java based web application that runs on Apache-Tomcat. I'm having one problem with downloading RTF documents to WordPerfect.

The way it works is the application creates a RTF document and saves it on the server, providing a link to open it in MS Word or Corel WordPerfect. It works with any version of Word and WordPerfect, but there is a problem I get sometimes with WordPerfect.

In order to open in WordPerfect, I have to change the file association for RTF so it opens in WP. The problem is that the web application downloads the RTF file to a temporary location in the user's ...\local settings\temporary internet files\content.IE5\sometempname folder.

On most computers, this presents no problems. On some, I get an error that WordPerfect can't find the file. The error I get is something like this:

C:\Documents and Settings\username\Local Settings\Temporary Internet Files\Content.IE5\4HE7GDMN\DistrictInformation.rtf  cannot be opened or retrieved: the file cannot be found.

I can find the file using Windows Explorer, so I know it's there.  The application downloads it to that location, then uses the file association for RTF files to open the file in the application that is associated with it.

The thing that is puzzling and so hard to figure out is that it works on some computers, but not on others.  The version of Windows in all cases is Windows XP Pro SP2.
The version of WordPerfect varies from 9.08033 to 12.xxx. The version of WP doesn't seem to matter so much as some setting on the computer.  There are 2 computers right next to each other that have the same OS version # and the same exact WP version #. One works with no problems, the other gets the error and won't open the file.
If I choose to download the file to a local folder (such as C:\Download) instead of open the file directly, then open the downloaded file from that folder, WP opens it just fine. It just gives the error if I try to open it directly using the file association.

The problem is the same in IE 6 and IE 7.  I've put the application URL in the Trusted Sites under security, so that shouldn't be an issue.

Does anyone know how to resolve this?

We've already had a crack at sorting this problem out.  It looks like you have got it down to resolving it in general, but specific pc's behave differently.

The length of the path name in the temp folder could be an issue - if it is very long then WP may have difficulty if it has some kind of upper limit and is truncating it - try storing the file nearer the root.

A couple of other points:-

(1) Local Settings is a normally hidden folder.
(2) If you are poking around in a different profile on the same pc there can sometimes be file permission issues.
(3) I wouldn't reply on storing anything important in Content.IE5.  It is a folder that I would leave well alone because it is managed by IE and could be wiped at any time.

We've solved that particular problem which was trying to save the downloaded RTF file to a web folder. But now we have this different problem where the RTF file won't even open in the first place. It's very weird because it doesn't seem specific to a particular version of WP or even a service pack, but is specific to a particular workstation.
This happens with version 9, 10, 11, and 12, but only on some workstations. On others there is no problem.

The problem is that the application isn't controlling where the file is downloaded to. Internet Explorer handles the download and that's why it's put into a temporary internet files location. We can't control this without installing some sort of active-x control that would download the file to a specified location.

Here's the actual code that forms the link that users click on to open the RTF document:

<A HREF="/cms/cmsDocument/JusticeSubpoena_1149_05172007110712.rtf?
filePath=C%3A%5CProgram+Files%5CApache+Software+Foundation%5CTomcat+5.5%5Cwebapps%5CcmsDocs%5CUCMIS%5Cmerge%5C2007%5C05%5CJusticeSubpoena_1149_05172007110712.rtf
&title=JusticeSubpoena_1149_05172007110712.rtf&contentType=application%2FX-download" class="ablack" title="Edit document" target="blank"><img src="/cms/images/download.gif" alt="Download" width='15' height='15' border="0"></A>&nbsp;

The file name is long because it includes a time and date stamp as part of the file name, so maybe WP is having a problem with a long file name.
When a user clicks on this link, Internet Explorer puts it in a temporary folder and then I guess it calls the associated application to open it up.

I think the problem is in a setting on a particular machine - either a setting in IE, or WP or the registry. I can't figure out what it is though.

I found this on WP's KB:

http://support.corel.com/scripts/rightnow.cfg/php.exe/enduser/std_adp.php?p_sid=ZgNCeeCi&p_lva=&p_faqid=207266&p_created=1022192316&p_sp=cF9zcmNoPTEmcF9ncmlkc29ydD0mcF9yb3dfY250PTEwMDMmcF9zZWFyY2hfdGV4dD1VbmFibGUgdG8gZmluZCBmaWxlIEludGVybmV0JnBfc2VhcmNoX3R5cGU9MyZwX3Byb2RfbHZsMT04JnBfcHJvZF9sdmwyPX5hbnl_JnBfc29ydF9ieT1kZmx0JnBfcGFnZT0x&p_li=

But it talks about WPD files specifically. I tried to apply it to RTF files and it didn't make any difference.

Any thoughts about what setting could be changed to fix this on the few computers where this is a problem?

Thanks,

Ron

Try Sharing the Content.IE5 folder, then mapping this share to a drive letter.  This will then rule out whether WP is having a problem with lengthy pathnames.

by: moorhouselondonPosted on 2007-05-22 at 13:31:15ID: 19137218

Let me rephrase that to remove ambiguity:-

Try Sharing the Content.IE5 folder, then mapping this share to a drive letter.  By pointing to the file using the drive letter, rather than the full path, will shorten the path and hence rule out whether WP is having a problem with lengthy pathnames.

After a lot of testing, it seems the problem comes down to if the user is an Administrator on their computer or not. If they are not an Administrator, then WordPerfect complains about opening files from Temp folders.

I don't understand why this is, but that's what seems to be the problem. Never have the problem if the user is an admin on their computer - sometimes, but not always, have the problem when they are a restricted user of some type.

Thanks for trying to help.

by: weiroblpayPosted on 2007-06-26 at 13:58:16ID: 19367789

It turns out that it doesn't matter if the user is an administrator or restricted user on their computer. The problem occurs in either case on some computers, but not others.

I don't have a solution for this and no solution has been offered.

If the exact versions of WordPerfect on different pc's is identical, and the pc's are similar spec, then I would say these are the possibilities:-

(1) A specific Registry setting is different on the two pc's.  (Maybe RTF is set to be opened with different programs on the different pc's).
(2) A library file (DLL) is different on the two pc's.
(3) A Microsoft update is loaded on one pc and not the other
(4) A setting in the firewall settings is diffrerent.
