Question

Excel 2007 - Office Button not working normally.

Asked by: edlmkts

The Office 2007 button (top left) on one of our PCs is not working. When you hover over it you get the help message about how to save files etc. , but when you click on it nothing happens. We are fairly new to supporting 2007 and this one has us stumped.

WD40 doesn't work?  (LOL)

I know this sounds silly, and I don't have Excel 2007 to hand but:  I know that in older versions many functions don't work if you've closed all your sheets down.  Open up a Spreadsheet and see if you can access the button then.

Tried that but unfortunately no joy.

Have you tried to disable any add-Ins that run on Excel?

by: labelonukPosted on 2007-10-19 at 08:44:18ID: 20109809

If this was upgraded from 2003 then some add-ins from that could still be on there with arent compatible with excel 2007

by: edlmktsPosted on 2007-10-19 at 09:24:20ID: 20110132

Its was a clean install from a System Builder's Disk. No Application Addins are installed, or can be seen to be installed.

Have you downloaded all available updates for this version from Windows Update? (the Microsoft Office updates, that is).

We have done all the updates from Microsoft Update...not Windows Update.

by: labelonukPosted on 2007-10-22 at 01:40:47ID: 20121580

Have you unistalled it then reinstalled it? Can you use the same CD on a different computer to see if you have the same problem?

by: edlmktsPosted on 2007-10-22 at 03:35:37ID: 20122040

We have removed the software and re-installed it already. We have iinstalled several PCs with the same system builder CD already without problems.

>We have iinstalled several PCs with the same system builder CD already without problems.

On identical pc's?

It must be either (1) a driver problem (video card favourite culprit to blame) (2) an administrative setting that's disabled it (3) a corrupt user profile.

There is a diagnostic utility I believe, but to use it you need to press... the Office Button.

by: edlmktsPosted on 2007-10-24 at 01:22:27ID: 20137083

Lol . I think we can rule out individual user profiles since we've tried logging in as various users.

OK - We gave up and installed Office 2003 !
Thanks for all your helpful ideas.

You know what, I have ran into the same exact problem just this week.  We are now switching over to Office 2007 for any new user, and I did upgrade about 10 people myself and they all worked fine.  However I noticed when setting up the last 3 new users we have this exact same issue.  The difference on these is our hardware department are the ones whom are setting up Office 2007 instead of me.  Not sure what's going on but I need to fix this prefereably without having to reinstall the last 3 users.

Hi,

Running Microsoft Office Diagnostics from the Start Menu

In the event that you cant get Excel to run due to errors in the program, the Diagnostics program can be started from your computer's Start Menu. To do this:

Click on the Start button in Microsoft Windows

Use your mouse to point to All Programs to open the Programs menu

Point to Microsoft Office folder in the menu to open it

Point to Microsoft Office Tools folder to open it

Click Microsoft Office Diagnostics to start the diagnostics program

Click Continue

Click Run Diagnostics

that sorted the problem for me.

Thanks
