Question

Document library web part security in SharePoint 2007

Asked by: curt2000

I have a SharePoint 2007 page with a document library web part on it.  I'd like the page to have separate permissions than the document library so that while the page is available to everyone, only certain people can access documents in the document library web part.

Currently I have a sub-site underneath the page with separate permissions which contains the doc library, but I'd like to just have everything on one page instead.  Is this possible?

Thanks.

You can "target" your "listview" webparts to a specific audience. However if your audience does not have permissions to documents or the document library then he/she will not see them in the listview webpart.

Ok, let me clarify.  I would like a page setup with contribute access for a group of people.  Then I'd like to add a document library to that page.  The permissions for the library would be assigned to a subset of people who already have access to the page, but still contribute access.

Using audiences doesn't seem to actually control permissions because if a person who is not part of the audience types in the physically address for the web part they would be allowed in.

I'm thinking that SharePoint does not allow you to assign permissions directly on web pages, but entire pages or sites only.

I understand you have a user base that accesses the entire page, on which you have a document library that is more sensitive in nature, therefore only a subset of those users should see those documents.

To solve this, you can assign separate permissions to the Document Library, breaking its inheritance and giving it custom permissions, which are more restrictive.  Please note, the excluded users will still see the Document Library link on your site -- but instead of a list of documents, they will see a message they are not authorized to view this content.

In addition, you can selectively control permissions for the documents themselves, if it is only certain documents and not the entire library which are sensitive and need to be restricted.  In this case, security trimming will automatically hide those documents to which users do not have access.

No problem; I don't usually monitor questions, because someone else beats me to it, but this went unanswered for an unusually long time so I just had to jump in.  Hope it helped.  Better late than never..

PS - To set the individual document permissions, mouse over the document until you get the down arrow, then choose Manage Permissions.
