Question

Business Analyst

Asked by: tparvaiz

I am a business analyst (with 5 years of requirements gathering and documentation experience)& need your experts advice here...

Option 1) CBAP or ITIL or PMP certification

Option 2) I do not have experience in Agile or iterative BA methodologies... I can get some exposure via starting a new project and taking it through agile methods...

Given that I have a year or two before my next move (job changes), would you recommend option 1 (certification) or option 2 (hands on)&

I am looking for something that will make me more employable&

Thanks

I can only say that ITIL is very popular in the IT world as an efficieny framework that i'm sure any related managment team has heard of by now and appreciates.

Hi,

It all depends on what employer wants.  But gathering more and more experience on work is more importnat. If your profile has more skill sets  and you can elaborate your knowledge in interview phase to employer. You can get through.

In two years span if you get any certifications it is dessert with dinner.

Thanks
Sparab

OriNetworks:

Do you think ITIL (foundation certification) would be enough...?

by: OriNetworksPosted on 2009-07-27 at 20:03:16ID: 24957613

Bottom line is that experience is key. Employers dont care what degree or certifications you have if you dont have the experience to back it up. Get whatever you can get but as far as certifications go, I guess you can start with ITIL since its so popular and highly accepted as an effienct money saving framework.

As sparab says, "It all depends on what employer wants". If an employer is looking for a certain certification, then good, that might be a plus. But all employers can look at your experience and see things especially if you are able to communicate the basics about your projects. Benefits, cost savings, challenges and how you overcame those, etc.

Hi,

Generally when I've employed anybody this is the general order that I've applied.

1, ability to do the work, experiance, relevant to the role qualifications

2, personality, will you fit, are you worth the trouble, will I be glad I've employed you (or not)

3, Other secondary skills, structure, communications, presentation etc

To answer your question, if I need a BA to work as part of a project team and you have no formal project qualifications or experiance you'd probably be passed over.

On the other hand if I'm not comfortable that you can interact with business people on their terms in their language I would not care how many qualification you have.

Bottom line, understand the structure that companies use in IT such as ITIL, PMP, COBIT etc etc etc, but these are secondary to formal BA qualifications and if you want to remain a BA, concentrate on those qualifications that prove you are a capable BA and find a bit of time to be at least aware of the rest.

Some certifications are helpful to get into the position where you can start building your experience. Having a ITIL or PMO certification will help you get through the first screening where employeers don't have the time or energy to look to see who's actually behind the application.

If I where to hire I would look for a person with real world experience, a deep understanding of how agile methods apply and affect the way we can run projects.
