i've been able to dig a little deeper.

the XSD definition of PT0h0m0s is that of XSD:Duration,

we have a few examples.
The XML file has the following entry.
PT40H48M0S - which we know means 40 hours, 48 minutes and 0 seconds.
we also know that that [in project terms] converts to 2448 minutes.
however, in the database its stored as 24480

Again, but with different values

PT73H36M0S - which we know means 73 hours, 36 minutes and 0 seconds.
we also know that that [in project terms] converts to 4416 minutes.
however, in the database its stored as 4416000 ?!?!?!

has anyone come across this before?

Not clear what you are doing with the XML file to come up with the numbers. Are you importing it into something and then doing a conversion to a number of minutes ? If so, we'd need to see the conversion formula that you are using.

You can create a custom text field to take in the original data as is, i.e., PT40H48M0S, then you can create another custom field that could look at the first custom field, and select the separate pieces by using a function such as:

(CInt(Mid([Text2],InStr([Text2],"T")+1,2))*60)+CInt(Mid([Text2],InStr([Text2],"H")+1,2))

Which will give you the 2448 that you are looking for. You can then update this into the Duration field by adding a module in the VBA Editor that can run through the tasks and update the Duration according to your imported and converted information. In the following case, I used the Text field (Text2) for the above formula, and the Number field (Number2) for the following:

Sub updateDur()
    i = 1
    Do Until i = Application.ActiveProject.Tasks.Count + 1
        Application.ActiveCell.Task.Duration = CInt(Application.ActiveCell.Task.Number2)
        i = i + 1
        Application.SelectCellDown
    Loop

End Sub

After you import, simply run this routine to update the Duration(s).

One more note: you should probably have your default units for duration set to minutes, otherwise, even though it will import as minutes it will show in the default units -- i.e., as days (unless that's what you want).

You can change the default units for duration in the Tools Menu, Options, Schedule Tab, then set the "Duration is entered in: " Choice to your desired units.

Hope this resolves your situation.

In reading my comment above, I want to clarify once more to alleviate any confusion. I imported the into my custom Text field (in this case Text2).

I placed the custom formula in my custom Number field (In this case Number2).

I placed my custom subroutine into a module in the VBA Editor for Project.

Then you can run the routine when you want to update the Duration field.

the XML in question is coming straight out of project 2003, if you save a project in XML format all task durations are in the format PTxHxMxS... however, in the Project Database Schema, they need to be a Float value. So I need to convert the PTxHxMxS into a float value.

Leslynf, this would have been the easiest way, however, we do not have the liberty to modify the project server database, all column types need to stay as is.
