Baseline fields are not populating within MS Project when the project is baselined.

I recently baselined my project within MS Project.  When I try to pull up Baseline Start, it does not match my current Start dates.  It appears to be holding onto a previous Baseline.  When I try to Baseline and store in Baseline 1 then "Baseline 1 Start" fields still read "NA."  I've even tried clearing the Baseline and redoing it.  No joy.   What are Baseline fields used for?  I'm confused.  I would like MS Project to take a snapshot of all my Start/Finish/etc. fields in my current plan.  Note: Actual Start and Actual Finish dates were populated from baselining for those tasks marked 100% - as they should be.  I just don't have a clear understanding of these Baseline fields in project.  If the "Baseline" fields do not hold a snapshot, which fields do?  Thanks.
