dbase118 -- thanks for the feedback thus far. I'll check out your later response (about network diagram).

Browse All TopicsI'm using MS-Project for a school project. Entering the activities and creating a linked Gantt chart was easy.
In addition to the Gantt chart, we also need to include a "PERT diagram". We have an example report that depicts that PERT diagram similar to the one shown in JPG snapshot at:
http://img259.imageshack.u
When researching "PERT" in more details, it appears that the diagram is more like a network diagram (best, middle, worst case). When having MS-Project create a network diagram, it looks completely different though.
My questions:
1. If my goal is to duplicate the approach (as shown in sample JPG), can I do this in Project? If yes, how?
2. Or do I need to look for another software to create such a network diagram? If yes, do you have a recommendation for a free product (30-day license is fine)? Preferably, the software should allow me to import the data from MS-Project.
Thanks,
EEH

OK... I was able to produce something of a network diagram...although it is not exactly like what you showed above. I believe that one was done in MS Visio. If you have Visio we might be able to work toward that exact layout.
However...using only MS Project I came up with the following. After entering PERT data MS Project codes Optimistic Series under field names (Start1, Duration1, Finish1). Expected (Start2, Duration2,Finish2) and Pessimistic (Start3, Duration3,Finish3) so by customizing the Network Diagram Template I was able to produce the following example. Interesting that I did not see a built in method to display PERT data. If this looks usable I will post all the steps. If not...I will look for 3rd party software or maybe someone else will chime in .
dbase118:
again, thanks for the prompt response. I have Visio -- so, if you produced a chart like the original example, then that's the way to go. I'd truly appreciate if you could post your example in steps.
Currently, I'm trying to crunch my "numbers" (optimal, slack, and pessimistic). Although I only have roughly 40 tasks (17 activities), I'm already baffled with the numbers. I posted another question a moment ago... it makes reference to "project-length" vs. "man-hours". It's posted at:

Anyhow, that's a 2nd question. So, first things first... I'd appreciate any feedback as to how I can create the network diagram as shown in the JPG. Once I know that (and found answers) to my 2nd question, I should be able to build it.

Was just looking at your other question....
Unfortunately, I dont have Visio installed so I am operating blind but I did find your node layout here..so definitely creatable in Visio.

Here are the MS directions for doing a PERT in Visio.

There is a hiccup here. The Network Diagram in MS Project used to be called a PERT chart in earlier versions. However to do the best, optimal, worst case you need to use the PERT Analysis toolbar. You can access by going to View...Toolbars....PERT Analysis.
One of the buttons on the toolbar will be the PERT Entry form where you can enter the three data points (best, optimal, worst) and then you can view optimistic, pessimistic or expected Gantt. Dont recall seeing all three on a network diagram like that example. Looking into it. Will provide more ASAP.
