Question

Can't Log Into Project Portfolio Server after fresh install

Asked by: Banjoey

Hello,

I am facing a unique problem. I recently installed the
msdn versions of MS Project Portfolio Server 2007 on SQL Server 2005 with Sharepoint 3.0 in a server farm environment.
SQL2005 separate Server +reporting Services
Portfolio Server separate Server
Project Server 2007 and Sharepoint 3.0 on same box

Installation went well, however, I am not able to login using any of the
standard user Ids into the Project Portfolio Server site.  I can't figure out what the "superuser id" is and according to the deployment guide the superuser should be the login id when the site was installed.  I get the error message; "You have entered an incorrect user name/password combination."

When I checked the dbo.SfUsers table, for default administor ID I can see
the password as "Invalid pass, uses Integrated Auth".

Pls. let me know how I can login to the tool first time after installation.

The Super User is the user, which has istalled Protfolio Server.

This user can only create accounts.

To configure the system, create an Administrator user. In other words, log on to the application as a Super user, create an Administrator user, log out, and then log on again as an Administrator to configure the application.
To create an Administrator user:
1. On the Settings screen, select User Management, and then User Group Management.
2. Click the Add User Group tab. Name the group Administrator and select Allow for all the rights, and then click Add.
3. Return to the Settings screen, select User Management, and then select User Management.
4. Click the Add User tab. Choose Admin as the login name, and use Administrator for the full name.
5. Choose and confirm a password.
6. Select Administrator for organization rights assignment, and click Add.

Thanks Bembi,

The problem actually starts with the Super User.  The account which I installed the software is the superuser if I understand the documentation.  Unfortunally, that USER can't log in as with any other user that is remotely connected to this system.

I can't get past the login screen to perform any of the steps you have mentioned.

Have you tried to just add the login page (or the portfolio server address) to the trusted sites?

Have you tired to log onto the portfolio server machine itself as user, which has installed the PS?
I assume the user account, which have installed the PS is a domain account?

by: BanjoeyPosted on 2009-01-13 at 11:39:39ID: 23366366

I am receiving incorrect password/user name message.  Yes I can log into the server itself.  yes the site is trusted.

I mean: From which machine do you try to log onto Portfolio Server, from the server machine intself?

Is SP1 installed or the CD with SP1?

by: BanjoeyPosted on 2009-01-13 at 12:27:16ID: 23366896

Yes SP1 is installed for Portfolio Server.  I have tried logging in from the server itself as well as a remote workstation.

I was seeing lots of SideBySide Errors 59 and 32.  I fixed that by instlaled the Visaul C distributal tools.

But still can't get logged in as the super user to install other users.  I just keep getting invalid user/password errors.

I am on SP1 for SQL but am pretty certain that is not the issue.

Signed,

Stuck in Lodi.

I assume you see the logon screen, right?
Have you tried to use the domain name with the login name, i.e.
MYDOMAIN\SuperUserName  --> for a domain acount (NETBIOS)
SuperUserName@MYDOMAIN.COM --> for a domain account (Kerberos/FQDN)
MYSERVERNAME\SuperUserName --> for a local account

Note: NetBIOS domain  need not to be the same that FQDN domain.
Have a look at Active Directory Users and Groups, there are two names for logon for every user, one NetBIOS (pre WIN 2000 account) and one for Kerberos (FQDN)

I have attempted every conceivable method to log in.
I have installed this as a plan vanilla install exactly as it is detailed in the deployment guide for a server farm.

I am running three servers not four as I have put the reporting services on the SQL box.
I am running in a VMWARE plateform.  I don't see that as the problem.

I have installed this numorous times and still no luck.

I have troubleshot my event logs on all three boxes until they are absolutely clean!.

I am out of ideas and not sure where to go next.

I would assume some one some where has this system working.

Out of ideas.  I can't figure out how to enable logging on the portfilio server for that application even though there is a container for it in the event viewer.  Technet from Microsoft is of no use.

I increased the point value as this is just a tough one!

I assume, you can logon on Project Server, right?

On the machine, where PS is installed, can you post the IIS logs of the virtual machine, where the PS is installed? I assume it is the default web site.

On this IIS virtual machine, right click the virtual web server and enable logging (W3C). Also take notice or change the path for logging. Make a few log on attemts and post this part of the IIS log

I got so very frustrated with this and have since started over.  I am receiving another error.  Should start a new question as it doesn't seem to relate to this problem anymore.

Keep in mind the following:
Portfolio server also uses resources from other applications like IIS / SharePoint. If there are existing instances, it may be (it is often), that installations are changing permissions for Web-Sites. The permission son IIS are a little bit confusing, as you have to differentiate, if the permission belongs to IIS, Sharepoint or the file system.

If you install an application into an existing IIS instance (like default website), the permissions may not be anymore as expected, especially if sharepoint resides there for any reason.

Another possible error source is the SQL server authentication. As IIS 6 is not able to inherit user permissions, PS as well as Project Server are using bridge accounts to the database. If these accounts do not have the correct permissions, the connection between db and website may fails and with that also the logon to the PS.

The IIS logs may show, if there is such a problem (if IIS is the source).

This is a very common problem that has no solution.  I have sinse rebult the test on a single server.
