Sounds like you have not made the Project Server connection the Default connection for Project Professional. Go to the dialog where you define the server connections and make sure that your connection to the server is set with Default = "yes" (or as appropriate for your language.)

Check the Queue on the Server. Make sure that the Microsoft Office Project Server Queue Service is running, and check in PWA (Server Settings -> Manage Queue) to see if there is any failure message.

If those don't point you in the right direction, check the Application Event log on the Project Server machine.

There is no common single cause for this, so you will need to investigate.

From a brief look at your event logs, it looks like you are having permissions problems with one of the services that is running as Network Service. You probably already know that Network service is a built in account that does not have many permissions to access local files and can't necessarily connect to remote machines, such as your SQL server.

Make sure that the Project Server services are not running as Network Service.

Appropriate permissions for the Project Server service accounts can be complicated, but one possible answer is to install everything to run as one user which has administrator permissions on the Project Server, and can connect to the SQL server. (This is not the most secure setup.)

You may consider trying the application install again: The document that I use as a guide for this is:

I'm really sorry to hear that you had bad experiences with a consulting firm on this product. This product (Microsoft Project Server) has plenty of power, but plenty of configuration challenges that mean many (most?) installations will be helped by a MS Partner that knows the product. When consulting firms do a bad job on this, it discourages companies from getting the help they need.

We are now getting into an area of permissions and configuration details that I feel very uncomfortable giving advice to someone across the internet. Changing these options can break your server and require SQL, SharePoint, and Project Server knowledge to fix.

I do recommend that you get the Project Server services running as a Domain user, but simply changing the service identity may break more than it helps. The account running the service will need access to the databases in SQL server.

Depending on the resources available to you, I would investigate reinstalling the system. The simplest install will be to use a single AD domain account for the services. This user will need administrator permissions on this box. (This is not the most secure, but I think the trade off of security versus simpler set up is worth it for you.)

Follow the instructions in the links I provided above for a "By the book" install.

Just a very quick solution if you are short of time and just need publish any way. You can use one of online alternatives to MS Project. Like ganttzilla.com. They have secured publishing option of any MS Project file formats.

by: jbfraserPosted on 2009-06-29 at 14:48:36ID: 24740579

Gantzilla can not connect to Project Server, and can not "publish" projects to Project Server.

It may be able to save to the Project file format, but it can not save to Project Server, let alone "Publish" the project.

This comment provided by aldr2009 does not relate to the original question of how to Publish to Project Server 2007.
