Question

How do I change the way MS Project 2007 predecessors are listed

Asked by: broccolini

Presently we set up MS Project 2007 to list predecessors in column Text1, list predecessor name in column Text2, and in column Text10 will show predecessor ID and predecessor name separated by commas. Here is an example of what we would like.
Task 3 (Doors) has 2 Predecessors (Structure, Frame). Structure and Frame are task 1 & 2. The column would appear as follows.
Text1 = 1,2
Text2 = Structure, Frame
Text10 = 1,2,Structure,Frame
Text10 populated by a macro that grabs Text1 & Text2 to make Text10.
The format we would actually like to see in Text 10 is as follows
1-Structure,2-Frame
I have attached the code that we presently use to create Text10, maybe that could be elaborated on.
Thanks,
PB

Sub CreatePredecessorTextName()

    Dim t As Task

    For Each t In ActiveProject.Tasks

        t.Text1 = ""

        t.Text2 = ""

        t.Text10 = ""

        For Each p In t.PredecessorTasks

            If t.Text1 = "" Then

                t.Text1 = ActiveProject.Tasks.UniqueID(t.UniqueID).Predecessors

                t.Text2 = "  " + ActiveProject.Tasks.UniqueID(p.UniqueID).Name

                t.Text10 = t.Text1 + t.Text2

            Else

                t.Text2 = t.Text2 + "," + ActiveProject.Tasks.UniqueID(p.UniqueID).Name

                t.Text10 = t.Text1 + t.Text2

            End If

        Next p

    Next t

MsgBox ("Complete")

End Sub

Do you need text1 and text2 or are you just using those for temporary storage? If you don't need them, you could clean this code up further.

Sub CreatePredecessorTextName()

    Dim t As Task
    Dim str1, str2, str10 As String
  Dim looped As Boolean
    For Each t In ActiveProject.Tasks
        str1 = ""
        str2 = ""
        str10 = ""
        looped = False

        For Each p In t.PredecessorTasks
            looped = True
            str1 = str1 + "," + CStr(p.UniqueID)
            str2 = str2 + "," + ActiveProject.Tasks.UniqueID(p.UniqueID).Name
            str10 = str10 + "," + CStr(p.UniqueID) + "-" + ActiveProject.Tasks.UniqueID(p.UniqueID).Name
        Next p

        ' Now trim off the leading commas.
        If (looped) Then
           str1 = Right(str1, Len(str1) - 1)
           str2 = Right(str2, Len(str2) - 1)
           str10 = Right(str10, Len(str10) - 1)
        End If

        t.Text1 = str1
        t.Text2 = str2
        t.Text10 = str10
    Next t

MsgBox ("Complete")
End Sub

Text1 and Text2 are just temp storage. I ran the macro but it is not getting the correct predecessor info. The formatting is correct but the info is not. It is not grabbing the correct predecessors in the predecessors column. I am not able to attach an MS Project file. It should take the predecessor info and the predecessor task name and then format at as you did. I looked at your code but I am not much of a programmer so couldn't find where to make the necessary change.
Thanks again,
PB

Ok. Removed the extra two fields, changed the "UniqueID" to ID, which should get you what you want? if it's wrong, a screen shot of what you're seeing may help...

Almost got it. Seems like just a bit more info is missing. I have attached a print screen, sorry didn't think of that before, was trying to upload the project file. lol. If you see on the last line possible in the print screen, there are 2 predecessors, some of the info is missing on the line.
Thanks

The last line, line 35, appears to be correct to me. It shows both predecessors number and their names. What info is missing/ What were you expecting to get?

That's a decent sized additional requirement... I think I've got something for that. Unless I'm missing something, this is not very easy. Give me another hour...

Here you go. As mentioned, this made the code big, in a hurry. The problem is the large number of ways that lag may be specified.

I've tested this code, but not exhaustively. Please run your own test. By the way, the code can create almost ambiguous displays:
1SS-1 wk-1 Task,2SS-2 day-1 day task
(If the predecessors were named "1 Task" and "1 day Task")

    Const MinutesPerWeek = 2400

    'These should not need customizing
    Const MinutesPerHour = 60
    Const MinutesPerEHour = 60
    Const MinutesPerEDay = 1440
    Const MinutesPerEWeek = 10080
    Const MinutesPerEMonth = 43200 'an emonth is 30 edays.

Glad I could help.

But, I don't think you meant to close the question. When you do that, no points are awarded: you are essentially saying that no answer was provided and you don't need an answer any more.

Please accept one of the responses as an answer.

Thanks...
James Fraser

oh, I see you were trying to select your own response as the primary answer. If you select the response of someone else, you don't go through the four day waiting period...
