I mean the bar side  that start in Jun, 2009

by: dbase118Posted on 2009-10-19 at 06:31:27ID: 25604960

Go to Project menu and to Project Information. Is your start date accurate in this dialog box?
If so, have you already entered tasks? You can try going to the first task and then clicking the "SCROLL TO TASK" button. It looks like a hand pointing at a blue Gantt bar.

by: SnodlanderPosted on 2009-10-22 at 11:24:49ID: 25637397

Another way you can do it is by opening up the project wizard and completing step 1 to set the project start date.

by: tommym121Posted on 2009-10-24 at 20:47:22ID: 25655448

The Project information seems to be ok it is Nov 09.
I can not fin this "SCROLL TO TASK" button in MS Project 2003. If you are using the same version, please let me know where to activate this button

Where do I open the project wizard, not sure if I have done it or not.

by: SnodlanderPosted on 2009-10-25 at 03:32:35ID: 25656211

What version of Project are you using?
I don't recall if previous versions look the same but in 2007 at least there is a toolbar called the "Project Guide" toolbar.
This toolbar has the following buttons/drop-down menus: "Tasks", "Resources", "Track", "Report".
Can you see this toolbar?
If not then right-click anywhere on your toolbar section at the top of the page and select to show the "Project Guide" toolbar by clicking on it (Note I don't remember if this is available in versions earlier than 2007)

Once you have the toolbar showing select "Tasks" and a column should appear on the left hand side of your Gantt chart with a bunch of hyperlink options.
The first of these options is to "Define the Project" select this.
Then set your start date.

Assuming that your start date is set correctly but in the Gantt chart you still have the project starting earlier than the chosen start date then you must have a task that has a constraint to "Start no later than" the date shown as the start date.
Highlight all of your tasks then select the icon on the standard toolbar that looks like a white folder (to the right of the link tasks icon) this will open the properties of all of the selected tasks.
Then go to the advanced tab and change the constraint type to be "Start as soon as possible" this should fix your problem. (note it will also remove all date specific constraints that you have already set)

Alternatively make a copy of your plan, change the extension to .mdb and post it here and I can take a look at it and tell you where you are going wrong.

As you request I upload the project file as mdb. Thanks

by: SnodlanderPosted on 2009-10-25 at 10:42:22ID: 25657409

OK so in that project plan your first task begins on 14/10/09.
What exactly do you want to do from here?
Do you just want to change the project start date to Nov 2nd (for example)?

by: SnodlanderPosted on 2009-10-25 at 10:43:26ID: 25657415

Also, can you please confirm what version of MS Project you are using?

by: tommym121Posted on 2009-10-25 at 11:04:04ID: 25657477

I actuall using MS Project 2003.   I like to start at Oct rather than in june.  I have attach a snapshot of my MS Project

by: SnodlanderPosted on 2009-10-25 at 11:46:48ID: 25657631

Looking at your snapshot I am a bit confused.
Your project is already starting in October, not June.
Is it perhaps the date format that you are having trouble with?
Your date format is currently MM/DD/YY.

by: SnodlanderPosted on 2009-10-27 at 11:38:59ID: 25675868

Can you please confirm the issue?

Thanks.

by: tommym121Posted on 2009-10-27 at 17:57:23ID: 25679162

What I meantt is that Gantt Chart should start in Oct rather than June, so I can see more data starting from Oct onward.  By the way I cut off the rest of my project plan and just to show a snap shot and send to you.  Thanks.

by: SnodlanderPosted on 2009-10-28 at 03:30:13ID: 25681567

Your gantt chart DOES start in October!
Are you wanting to see more detail on the right hand side of the page where the bars are? i.e. broken down into Days as opposed to Months perhaps?

If so, right-click on "October" (or anywhere else for that matter) on the date bar at the top of the right-hand side of the chart (i.e. above the blue bars). Select "Zoom" and then choose the option "Entire Project"

Is that what you are after?

by: tommym121Posted on 2009-10-29 at 19:51:56ID: 25699911

I try to make the bars (start in October) close to the Predecessor column, i.e., without seeing any months that is more than October.

by: SnodlanderPosted on 2009-10-30 at 01:33:04ID: 25700963

Sure, no problem.
Above the side of the chart with the bars is a "Timescale" bar that currently shows "July August September October November etc."
Right-click anywhere on this timescale bar.
Select "Zoom"
and then choose "Entire Project"

That will fix it for you.

Let me know how you get on, or if any of the above instructions are confusing.

How did you get on Tommy?
Are you all sorted now?

I've been having a similar problem (Project 2007).  I need to change my project start date to Dec. 7 instead of Dec. 1.   I've tried to change it with the "Adjust Dates" button, it accepts the change but nothing in the gantt changes.  I've changed the project information to the new date, again, nothing in the gantt changes.  None of the tasks have been started, none of the task dates were manually set.  What the heck am I doing wrong?  Honestly, this is not the first time I've had this problem.  My usual solution is to start all over but I really don't want to continue doing that. Why won't it let me change my mind on when the project is going to start?

Thanks!
Kristi

Kristi, upload one of your offending project plans here by changing the extension to .mdb and I will take a look at it for you.
