Question

How do I prevent task end date pushing out when dependent task resource allocation (%) is changed.

We are experiencing an interesting issue where by when we decrease a resource allocation on a task to 40% or below, a subsequent tasks end date is pushed out. Attached is a before and after shot of the screen.

In the before shot you will see that task number 72 has the resource allocated at 41%. In the after shot, the resource is allocated at 40%. Notice that at 40%, task 74's end date is pushed out. However the duration does not change, nor does the work effort.

Even putting a constrain on the end date does not fix the issue.

I am open to any suggestions on this one as it has me baffled.

Are you using automatic resource levelling? If so, you may want to check the resource usage of the various resources you've assigned to task 74.
If not, this definitely looks like a bug (MS Project has several issues with multiple part-time resource assignments, you may have run into one).
Have you tried modifying very slightly the effort on task 74?

Your duration for the first task has changed. You went from 25.37 days to 26 days when changing from 41 to 40 percent. Esentially adding roughly 6 hours to the time needed to complete the task.  This is what caused your start day to move from Wenesday in the original to Thursday in the revisied.

Even so, I would have thought Friday for your end date. At 40% (the highest allotment in the second task) that resourdce can devote roughly 195 minutes per day to completing the task. So it will take parts of two days to complete.

Defi0 has a good suggestion to look in the resource usage view to see how the time is divided for that task. Also go to your Resource sheet and see if any of your resources show up in red. That will tell you that they are over-allocated somewhere.

Thanks for the feedback, however, it is not the first task I am concerned about. It is the second task (74). It is being increased substantially for no apparant reason.

Yes, I was talking about task 74. Did you check your resource usage, as well as do the test I suggested?

Hi,

Apologies for that. I have now taken a look following your advice and did find that one of the resources assigned to task 74 had some non working time in December causing the task to move out. Bu increasing the parent task (72) to 41% it bought the start dat beack and did not encraoch on this non-working time, hence the duration remained the same.

All sorted.
