Question

Project Server 2007: Blank Error Saving Global Resources

Asked by: Patrick_Anderson

I'm attempting to fill in the RBS field for all of the Enterprise Global Resources in my testing environment.  To do this I have (1) populated the Lookup Table associated with the RBS field, (2) created a spread sheet with all the resources and the RBS value they need, (3) Opened all the resources from the Resource Center in Project Pro, (4) copy and paste the RBS values from the spread sheet into the RBS field in Project Pro.

All seems to work well except when I try to save the resources.  Project Pro takes me to the "Errors Saving Resources" screen and tells me that I need to modify the resources, validate them and then save them.  The problem is that the "Errors" column is blank.  I can't figure out what error I need to fix so that I can save the resources.

Any suggestions?

I'm using Project Server 2007 with all cumulative updates (except for the one released last week) running on WSS 3.0 and SQL Server 2008.

Try to narrow the prolem down: it may only affect some of the resources, and it may not be from the RBS entries.

1. Are you able to save successfully when you just open all resources but don't make any edits?
2. If you copy and paste one RBS value, can you save?
3. If you manually select an RBS value for one resource can you save?
4. If you manually select an RBS for all resources (since it's test, just select one value and then drag-to-fill the others.) can you save?

Trying these things should help narrow in on the cause...

James,

Thank you for your suggestions.  A few pieces of information I forgot to mention is that I'm working with 600+ resources.  To do the tests you suggested, I limited the group to 62 resources (certain groups).  Also, the resources were created in Project via the AD Sync process.  When updating the resources in Project Pro, I first sort them by Group and Name.  I then insert the RBS column.

Here's what I found:

1. Are you able to save successfully when you just open all resources but don't make any edits?  YES.
2. If you copy and paste one RBS value, can you save?  NO - more detail below
3. If you manually select an RBS value for one resource can you save?  YES - more detail below.
4. If you manually select an RBS for all resources (since it's test, just select one value and then drag-to-fill the others.) can you save?  YES - more detail below.

While testing number 2, Project Pro crashed on me when I tried to paste into the RBS field.  I limited my resources to 32, 16 and 10, each time it crashed.  I then limited my test to 4 resources and was able to test.  However, I was not able to save.  After trying to paste into the RBS, I was not able to do tests 3 & 4.  I had to close out without saving.

For tests 3 & 4 I went back to my test set of 62 resources.  I was able to complete both of these test successfully.

Thanks,

Pat

Cutting and pasting into this column should work.

To continue to narrow in on the problem, try this:
open your test group, 62 resources. Set the value of one of the resource's RBS field to a new value. Copy and paste that value to a plain text document. Copy and paste that value so that it is on a few lines (maybe start with five.) Select those lines and try pasting into the RBS column. It should work. If so, then something is going wrong in the copy and paste of the Excel data. So then try copying the Excel data into a blank text document (just the RBS column) and then copy and paste that into Project.

Let us know how if any of that works...

I agree, it should work.  And it did on my old laptop.  I now have a new Dell Latitude E6400.  Something is different.

I first changed the RBS value for one resource (with the 62 resources open in Pro), copied that into Note Pad, copied that line to 5 lines in Note Pad.  Copied those 5 lines and pasted them into the RBS field in Pro.  It crashed.

Then.......

I changed the RBS value for one resource, copied and pasted that into Note Pad.  Copied that line to 4 lines in Note Pad.  Copied those 4 lines to resources in Project Pro and saved.  I got the same error as before.

I may have found a work-a-round.  I deleted one of the resources, copied and pasted the information (name, rbs, group, team, etc.) from Excel into the resource sheet of a new project and saved it on my hard drive.  I then imported that resource into the Enterprise Global Resource Pool (mapping the appropriate fields).  I then ran the AD Sync process and everything seems to have worked correctly.  I need to test the process some more before I can be possitive.

Strange.

Is there anything unusual about the RBS values for the resources that you have open? Any periods or dashes in the RBS value? Another test that might help narrow in on the problem: create a couple of new resources in PWA. Open just those resources and try pasting in an RBS value. (I'm wondering if something is wrong with one of the resources that is open in your earlier tries.)

Glad to hear you may have a work around.

There are dashes ("-") in some of the values.  Let me test with the values that don't have these and get back to you.

I changed one of the resources to a RBS value that did NOT have a dash in the value, copy that to Word Pad, repeated that line 4 times, copied that and pasted it into the RBS value for 4 resources.  I got the same error.

I also pasted the value into Excel and then copied to the same 4 resources.  Got the same error.

James.....I greatly appreciate your help and I apologize for this very late response.

Here's how I resolved the issue:

1.  I used the AD-Sync tool to populate all the resources in the database.

2. I opened the Enterprise Resource Pool in Project Pro and copied all the columns I needed to Excel.

3. In Excel, I populated the RBS and Team (custom) fields as needed.

4. I deleted all the resources from the Enterprise Resource Pool.

5. I copied all the resources from Excel into an off-line project plan.  I put the RBS and Team values in Text1 and Text2.

6. I used the "Import Enterprise Resources" option to import the resources into the Enterprise Resource Pool. (Tools > Enterprise Options > Import Resources to Enterprise).  I mapped the Text1 and Text2 fields to the RBS and Team columns.

7. I reran the AD-Sync to sync up the rest of the information.

Seems like a long way to get there but it worked.
