We use Confluence as well, and I spend plenty of time on the Confluence Forums. I know sorting tables is a request that will be coming eventually from teams at my company as well. I have yet to test these, but here is a page that lists some table plugins and macros that allow sorting and more advanced features- http://confluence.atlassia n.com/disp lay/CONFEX T/Common+t able+capab ilities

The Table Plus macro looks promising, however it breaks the Rich Text Editor, which can be a problem if you have average users editing pages. http://confluence.atlassia
There is also a Jira issue open at Atlassian, that you can vote for: http://jira.atlassian.com/
Good luck to a fellow Confluence developer!
