The Solution Rating System

Passing non-continuous cells into MATCH and OFFSET

Hello,

I'm trying to pass a range of noncontinuous cells to the MATCH and OFFSET function, but excel doesn't seem to like that kind of input, and I get the #N/A error message. Is there a way to pass a non continuous range of values to an array and have it return the position number and value?

Basically, what I'm trying to do is to create a payback period calculator. I have data points every half-year; however, I also have a summed year view, which is causing the problem. To be more concrete see the following dummy table below of cumulative cash flow.

2001  2001H1  2001H2    2002  2002H1  2002H2
-150    -100       -50           75        25           50

The required array of values is:
-100, -50, 25, 50

I want to find out is in which array position did the value cross 0, which is in position 3. And also to return the value of a cell one below position 2 (not pictured in this illustration)

The board, and one of the posters concluded that this must be done using a user-defined-function in VBA. However, in the end an 'expert' was able to use an array function to do something similar. Is there a non-VBA solution to this?
