The Solution Rating System

With so many solutions, how can you tell which solutions are most likely to help you and which ones are not? To provide you with a tool to use, we rate our solutions based on various elements that most accurately determine if a solution is a quality solution. To explain what factors affect the solution rating, here are the elements we take into consideration when formulating our solution rating.

  • The Grade of the Solution
  • The Zone Rank of the Expert Providing the Solution
  • The Number of Author and Expert Comments
  • The Number of Experts Contributing
  • The Feedback of the Community

Your Input Matters
Because of the way the system is set up, the most important variable in this equation is you. As a member of Experts Exchange, you are able to cast your vote on the quality of the solutions in regard to how complete, accurate, helpful and easy to understand each solution is. When you provide your feedback, each rating is adjusted accordingly. So, if you see a solution that has a poor rating that you think is a good solution, let us know by rating it. As you do, the rating will be adjusted and will become more accurate for other members of our site.

If you have any suggestions that you would like to make for our rating system, please ask a question in the Suggestions Zone of Community Support.

Thank you!

Excel 2007 gets "access denied" message saving to mapped drive

Tags: Microsoft, Excel, 2007
My client has a Windows Server 2003 R2 hosting a shared directory.  The share has an excel spreadsheet that everyone had "Write" access to through NTFS permissions.  The top level share has Share permissions set to Everyone Full Control.
Anyone can add to the file, but no one can delete it.
Here is a breakdown of the exact NTFS permissions:
Full Control: Nothing Checked
Traverse Folder / Execute: Allow
List Folder / Read Data: Allow
Read Attributes: Allow
Read Extended Attributes: Allow
Create Files / Write Data: Allow
Create Folders / Append Data: Allow
Write Attributes: Allow
Write Extended Attributes: Allow
Delete: Nothing Checked
Read Permissions: Allow
Change Permissions: Nothing Checked
Take Ownership: Nothing Checked

All client machines are running Windows XP sp2.  We have a mix of office 2003 and office 2007.  The users get a mapped drive to the share containing the file from a login script.  All users are able to access the file, open it, and edit it.  The problem occurs when they try and save the file.  If they are running excel 2003, the file is saves without problem.
Anyone who uses excel 2007 get the error message "Access Denied, contact your administrator" when they try and save.  Something else I noticed, when the SAVE fails Office 2007 dumps a TMP file into the network share. If I rename that temp extension to .XLS, I can open it and it contains the saved changes.  They can also save the file to their desktop and then drag and drop it into the network share without error.
As suggested on other forums, I have tried turning of antivirus, disabling offline files, and remapping the drive to no effect.
Anyone have any idea what is different about 2007 that it will not let me save this file?  Does it see the network permissions differently?  Any ideas would be greatly appreciated.
