Question

Excel - grey border lines disappear

Excel 2003...

I entered a column of names...about a dozen...A5:A30

Then I went to the "borders" icon on the tool bar and selected to put a border around each cell...this give me a black line for a border rather than a grey line...

Then I decided I did not want the black line border, so I went to the "borders" icon again and chose the pattern that has no border lines...effectivly removing the black borders...

Now I have NO borders in the cell range...neither grey nor black...

And I cannot figgure out how to get my default grey line borders around the cells back...

Idea???

If you select an unformatted cell, and try to set the border, you will see the default settings. Note them all, especially  the Line style and colour, and make your target cells match the settings.

I tried that...but it's not the same as the original...there are a number of difference line settings to choose, and you can change the color...match the original grey...but they are not the same...

The amazing thing is...this has happened to me once or twice before a few years ago...When I try to duplicate the issue, I cannot...

So I am beginning to think it was a "fluke" for some reason or another...

Banged my head on this for about 2 hours today...nothing seems to get those grey box lines back as they were originally...

I suspect that you selected the white border color, then clicked on each of the border lines in the Format...Cells...Border menu item. If so, you put a white border around the cells, which covers up the gray gridlines.

If you open that dialog again, the leftmost Preset choice is "None". If you choose that, then all borders will be removed from the selected cells.
