The Solution Rating System

With so many solutions, how can you tell which solutions are most likely to help you and which ones are not? To provide you with a tool to use, we rate our solutions based on various elements that most accurately determine if a solution is a quality solution. To explain what factors affect the solution rating, here are the elements we take into consideration when formulating our solution rating.

  • The Grade of the Solution
  • The Zone Rank of the Expert Providing the Solution
  • The Number of Author and Expert Comments
  • The Number of Experts Contributing
  • The Feedback of the Community

Your Input Matters
Because of the way the system is set up, the most important variable in this equation is you. As a member of Experts Exchange, you are able to cast your vote on the quality of the solutions in regard to how complete, accurate, helpful and easy to understand each solution is. When you provide your feedback, each rating is adjusted accordingly. So, if you see a solution that has a poor rating that you think is a good solution, let us know by rating it. As you do, the rating will be adjusted and will become more accurate for other members of our site.

If you have any suggestions that you would like to make for our rating system, please ask a question in the Suggestions Zone of Community Support.

Thank you!

Microsoft Word 97 won't print on Windows XP Pro SP3 clean install

Asked by JAStillwell in Microsoft Word, Microsoft Office Suite

Hello,

We recently reformatted and re-installed a client's computer that uses Microsoft Office 97 and Windows XP Pro SP3. Upon running Word 97 and trying to print to any printer (a USB-attached HP LaserJet P2015, PDF Complete, a networked HP LaserJet 4050N) Word 97 gets stuck spooling the print job, and a partial print job gets stuck in whatever printer we choose. We can click to close the Word 97 document, whereas it says that it's in the middle of a print job and would we like to stop it. We can print from any and all other applications that we try (including Excel 97, a niche application, WordPad) to any and all printers. Word 97 is the only one that doesn't work.

We re-installed Office 97. Removed all traces of Office in the registry. Installed just Word 97 from another CD by itself. Every time it gets stuck printing. We even rolled back SP3 to SP2 thinking that maybe there's an incompatibility with SP3 and Word 97. Didn't work. Searched the web for possible solutions (including here) and tried a couple of troubleshooting methods suggested (like removed Normal.dot, re-installing) and nothing works. Most of the suggestions seem to be related printing from Word 97 to s specific printer, not to any printer you choose.

Thanks for any insight on this!

Jeff
