Thanks. I think it may be the baseline grid issue. Appreciate it!

Browse All TopicsThere must be a simple solution to this- in InDesign I create a text box. Let's say it's a small text box with one sentence. If I want to reposition the box up or down, I have a problem. Let's say the text box is bigger than the sentence (I didn't shrink it to fit the text). If I select the text box and then either move it (drag it) up or down, or use my arrow keys up or down, the box moves, but the text doesn't. The text only moves in intervals of about 1/4th of an inch. It will jump from it's position to it's new position 1/4th of an inch higher or lower. Why can't I get it to move one pixel at a time? If I convert to outlines then I can move it precisely.

You also might want to see if you have a style enabled that is keeping the line spacing to 1/4". Then, you need to examine your paragraph style, and either go back to normal, overide it, or create a new style. As to exact positioning, once you've found the 1/4 inch space culprit, you should try the Move command, which allows you to position any element EXACTLY where you want it. This is similar to the Step and Repeat Action, which will also position items exactly after cloning them - it moving the clones to an exact specified interval. I hope this also helps you with your question. Rika

More than likely, the text is trying to avoid another object on the page using text wrap. If your Preferences/Composition/Te xt Wrap is set to skip by leading, the text will only move up and down in increments of the leading value. You have two options: First, you can override text wrap for the text box by selecting it with the pointer tool, Command-b to bring up the text frame options, and select "Ignore Text Wrap". Or you can deselect "Skip By Leading" under Preference/Composition/Tex t Wrap.
Your text box may also be using a Baseline Grid. Select the text box as above and Command-b to get to the Text Frame Options, click Baseline Options at the top of the window and deselect "Use Baseline Grid."
