The Solution Rating System

With so many solutions, how can you tell which solutions are most likely to help you and which ones are not? To provide you with a tool to use, we rate our solutions based on various elements that most accurately determine if a solution is a quality solution. To explain what factors affect the solution rating, here are the elements we take into consideration when formulating our solution rating.

  • The Grade of the Solution
  • The Zone Rank of the Expert Providing the Solution
  • The Number of Author and Expert Comments
  • The Number of Experts Contributing
  • The Feedback of the Community

Your Input Matters
Because of the way the system is set up, the most important variable in this equation is you. As a member of Experts Exchange, you are able to cast your vote on the quality of the solutions in regard to how complete, accurate, helpful and easy to understand each solution is. When you provide your feedback, each rating is adjusted accordingly. So, if you see a solution that has a poor rating that you think is a good solution, let us know by rating it. As you do, the rating will be adjusted and will become more accurate for other members of our site.

If you have any suggestions that you would like to make for our rating system, please ask a question in the Suggestions Zone of Community Support.

Adobe InDesign - Large Photo's & PDF Print Failure
Tags: Adobe, Reader / InDesign, Reader 8.1 / ID CS3, Color Printing, Handling Large Photos
Hello Again Experts!
As you will quickly notice within this question - I am new to the desktop publishing, and am trying to complete a personal project using InDesign CS3. This question is 2-fold, 1 part advice - 1 part problem.

Advice:
I am placing many large photos, and some Photoshop images, which seem to bog down the system enormously (particularly when scrolling by them). Is this normal? I believe this is just display properties and PC performance - but is there a way to permanently place a photo once I'm 100% certain the size and location is accurate??  The reason I ask is some of the photo's are really huge, but then resized to small photos. I think ID still takes into account the original huge size...

Problem:
I want to print out a sample of my works on a laser printer before talking to a printing company. So I exported my works to a PDF file, with most of the standard export options (as most of the options are foreign to this newbie) :-). I took the PDF and burned it to CD (9MB file-size). When trying to print to a Color Laserjet at a neighbors house, the 9MB PDF grows to over 148MB, and crashes the printer... What am I missing? Is there a better option for exporting to PDF to make it more non-industrial-printer-friendly??? I can print to an inkjet (using 3/4 of the ink cartridges!!) just not the LaserJet. I understand the problem maybe the Laserjets onboard memory.  It has 128MB. Im just curious if there is something else I can do for test printouts. ;-)

As always, thanks for your time, and your advice!!

Re: photo size

Yes, large images will slow down InDesign. The size (in pixels) of the images should reflect the intended use of the document. For printing the photos should be 200-300 dpi, e.g a photo printed at 2" x 3" should be 400 x 600 to 600 x 800 pixels. For screen display 100 dpi is plenty. Change them in PhotoShop before you place them in InDesign.

Re print problem

A couple of things you can do. You can change the image resolution when you create the pdf (to 200 dpi for printing). And you can try changing the LaserJet driver to a PostScript driver, which will not only create a smaller print file, but will also avoid memory problems.

Thank you for the information.
I thought I loaded the PostScript printer driver, but I will double-check, you're probably correct on that point. ;-)

As for the images within ID - last night I also realized the easy switching between Fast/Typical/High displays, which made scrolling much better. However, I would like to inquire just a little more on what you mentioned regarding photos = 300dpi. I have read about always uploading photos at 300dpi, but I am a bit confused on the most efficient way to do this.

You mentioned Photoshop - so is the standard routine for most designers (using Adobe ID, AI, and PS) to open photo in Photoshop > clean-up & save as 300dpi > within ID, create a frame > place photo > adjust to design?? I am trying to learn the "professional processes" for what I am doing. :-)

Thank you sincerely for your help! I will report back soon with what I find with the printer!

For commercial printing, 300dpi is usually recommended for photos. The way to get them to that is to open them in PhotoShop and adjust the size (in inches) to that of the printed photo, while at the same time you change the resolution to 300 dpi. Make sure you set photoShop to "Resample Image". Then save it under a new name if you want to keep the original. Place the new one in ID.

Just changing the dpi in PhotoShop is not enough as that will tell PhotoShop to change the size of the image and keep the same file size. A 1k x 2k pixel photo at 100 dpi is 10" x 20". At 200 dpi it is 5" x 10".

All seemed better last evening! I reinstalled the laser printer driver, and tried a few different settings. KPDL was what it was stuck on before - which was similar to postscript, or so I thought... Maybe not. (No need to clarify) ;-)
When I switched to the newer PCL XL format - printing was good, and the file size remained manageable. All I wanted to do was get a few test printouts for editing before sending the entire project to the expensive printers. And you helped me accomplish that! ;-)
Thanks again hdhondt!
