Question

InDesign CS3 - How to Easily Turn 2 Page Spread into Single Pages

Asked by: ottobock

Hello!
We designed our magazine to flow from one page to the next, so many pictures are on 2 [8.5 x 11] pages at a time. We also like viewing/designing 2 page spreads for easier online viewing.

Anyway, this is issue #1 for us, and the printer threw an unexpected requirement - which I thought would be easy - but leaves me scratching my head a little.

The standard letter-sized spreads should be submitted as single pages in an InDesign .INDD file.

I assumed they would ask for a PDF... So I practiced how to export a spread into single paged PDF, but cant seem to do this easily in INDD - primarily because I can not cleanly separate the pictures that spread across 2 pages.

I hope it's easy - and I really hope I did not make some major newbie error, or have to manually slice everything that stretches past 1 page.. :-(

Thanks for your help!

printing press normally don't go with the indesign file
so just Export the PDF from your main indesign file and don't tick the Spreads option in the PDF Exporting Wizard
it will save your PDF file with separate pages.

Hi SheharyaarSaahil!

Yes - I agree that this is not normal, and I am familiar with exporting PDF to single pages via the check box you mentioned.

But they did indeed ask for the INDD in single page format. They said their 'requisitioning' (unsure if I am using the same word they used) software can better handle an INDD file for little adjustments needed.

They know I an a new person to design and printing - and I am certain they may find a couple issues - regardless of how much I studied. Therefore, I am thinking this may be why they asked for the INDD, if the software can better (and cheaply) make minor adjustments needed... Just a guess, I really dont know.

So is there an easy way to make a 2 pg spreads into single pages?
Thanks for your time and ideas!!

ok then try this,

File>Document Setup
and untick Facing Pages

this should divide the Spread pages into Single Pages

I think I tried this, and it did not make any immediate change.
However, I am more than willing to try it again when I get home.

Just out of curiosity, do you have a picture stretched across 2 pages? Does the picture get separated?

nopes, just tried, didn't work for me too either!
asked one of my senior desingers here, he said there is no way to force Indesign to divide one image on two pages if ou are working on separate pages.

the only way is to either manually place the photos on the pages or get the PDF with separate pages.
sorry about that :)

:-(
That is too much work for a magazine, when each page was designed in spreads...
I think I have to talk to the printer again, we will have to work on another route. Their software should take PDF's I think.

I will keep this question open for a few days, just in case some good ideas come up. ;-)
If nothing by this weekend, then I'll be pretty certain I'll have to work closer with the printer, and I'll close it.
Thanks SheharyaarSaahil!

my designer people were really surprised to hear that a printer is asking for the indd file instead of pdf! :)

so take your time and good luck with this.

If your document layout was created as 8.5 x 11" facing pages, if you uncheck 'facing pages', you still have to manually move the pages in the layout to be separate, do you not?

I can think of a few reasons why they might want this based upon the binding your piece requires:

1) Perfect Binding: this allows them to adjust the bleed for perfect binding, and optical pushout for images that crossover two pages (you can push each half of the picture out slightly away from the gutter so that it creates the illusion that the image is not lost in between the pages).

2) Saddle Stitch: depending upon how 'anal' they are, they can maintain control of creep. For example, its easier to creep individual pages than spreads, but if they want even more control, they may go in and creep individual elements like folios and such.

Either way, having the original file allows them to make changes much easier than with a PDF.

Thanks for the info.

This is a small saddle-stiched magazine. I am thinking they want the INDD for exactly like you mentioned BongSoo - as much control as possible, and easier changes for them. They are fully aware that I am new to this, so I have to imagine they are assuming my designs are error-riddled. (and they're likely correct) ;-)

Thank you both for the great info and verification!

Too bad I found no easy fix, but I did get great information! Thanks again!
