Browse All TopicsI have a client who's previous PC was Windows 2000. Do to mandatory compliance issues we upgraded the user to Windows XP, SP2 and Office 2k3(if that's necessary info). Now onto the question.
I haven't come across this particular issue with 2003 Office and XP SP2, only with Vista and 2k7.
The software licensed to the user is Adobe Indesign CS (the first one). While on Windows 2000, he had the option to select the Arial Narrow font. Now with XP, the Arial variants are not available. The user needs to have the font narrow AND bold, hence needing the variant narrow.
***Please keep in mind that the font IS available in Office Apps
I've done a number of things to try and resolve the issue, such as installing the fonts from the previous PC, our own PCs. Also, I tried reinstalling the fonts from an SP2 disc we have, and also manually placing files in the Adobe Fonts folder.
I'm at a loss. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

This seems to be a known annoyance in InDesign, as may be seen referring to those sample case threads (among many others): orums/adob e-indesign -cs-fonts- missing-11 4136.html ngforum.co m/bb/showt hread.php? s=d1f20fbb 1f2161edac eeb350efee 6c61&p=382 29&mode=li near ssage/ 1309 704;jsessi onid=017B3 CB68617A66 FBAE5C02BF CBC0ECF.no de0

I studied those cases, and the following seem to be the most promising steps to take:
1. Run a systemwide search for "adobefnt*.lst" files. Delete the ones you find. Test if it works now.
2. Try to get the Arial Narrow font plus variants from a Win2k system, ideally a backup of that user's former machine. Or extract the files from a Win2k installation disk. Use them to replace the Arial Narrow in the Windows font folder as well as in the Adobe font folder. Reboot and test.
3. If the above would not work, the easiest and fastest workaround would be to convert the Arial Narrow font from truetype to postscript (using fontographer or any other professional fontmaker tool you may own). This should be expected to work for the user if he works by himself; it would be no solution, however, if the user has to share his files with co-workers.
