In Acrobat:
Show the advanced editing toolbar (View menu > Toolbars)
Select the link tool. Drag a rectangle around your link area.
Link Action: Custom Link, click next button
Actions tab;
Add the execute a menu item, click add
Select the File > Attach to email
Click OK 2x to close all dialogs
To test it, switch to the hand or pointer tool.
In InDesign:
Highlight some text;
Show the hyperlinks panel (Window menu > Interactive > Hyperlinks)
Click the new hyperlink button at the bottom (looks like a post-it)
Change the destination type to URL;
In the URL box type mailto:myemail@mywebsite.com
If you export to PDF you need to check the include hyperlinks option

Thanks.  The InDesign solution works well and, coupled with the Acrobat process, I see how to make the rectangle invisible.
The Acrobat solution in itself, simply attaches the PDF to an email, but doesn't actually fill in the email address.  Still, this response provides a great solution and advances my skill set another level deeper.  Adobe CS3 just keeps getting deeper.

I object to closing for 100 points; The question asked was answered, then in retrospect the author changed the question and changed their mind about points allocated. Please clarify how my answer was incomplete.

In the buisiness world, if a client has to manually type in an emial address, then that is an extra step I would liike to save the client.  As my comment above states, the proffered soluition only attached the PDF.  It is not a true mailto:  Having followed the solution, I was able to discern for myslef how to add the maillto link and not just attach the pdf.

The points are a generosity for revealing a menu options in Acrobat.

Dear SealDesign, Thank you for your quick reply. In the business world, if you fail to follow instructions, how is that my fault? I gave you clear concise instructions on how to create a mailto link in InDesign

In InDesign:
Highlight some text;
Show the hyperlinks panel (Window menu > Interactive > Hyperlinks)
Click the new hyperlink button at the bottom (looks like a post-it)
Change the destination type to URL;
In the URL box type mailto:myemail@mywebsite.com
If you export to PDF you need to check the include hyperlinks option

I tested it twice now and it works great. Why isn't this the correct solution

by: SealDesignPosted on 2009-07-31 at 12:22:22ID: 24991644

OK, on further review...the InDesign solution is 100% accurate.  Please be aware that I did not believe this soultion worked previouslly.  As it turned out, there was already a mailto hyperlink on the image that was not set up properly.  As I recall, when I followed your instructions...it did not appear to work.  Eventually, I removed one of the layered links and then, it did work.  I did not attribute that solution to your instructions, but to having removed whatever obstacle (layer) was preventing the original hyperlink from working.  Good solution.

Listen, I thought I accepted the solution two months ago! Also, I thought the number of point was 250. Now, after scouring the website page...I noticed it is listed as 500. Months ago...I did not know that I was responsible for awarding the points.  When as you say it appears I accepted the solution...That is exactly what I thought.  Too much drama over fictitious points.
