InDesign transparency tool changes opacity of entire document

machine 1: OSX 10.2.8, Adobe InDesign 3.0.1
machine 2: OSX 10.4.11, Adobe InDesign 5.0.4

The same thing happens on both machines:

I have a large image which is the entire size of the document.  For this example, I will call the image "sky.jpg"  - it is a picture of the sky.

I insert a small rectangle in the middle of the sky.  The rectangle is white.

I select the rectangle and go to the transparency tool.  I set the opacity from 100% to 50%.

However, when doing this, it not only changes the opacity of the rectangle, but also changes the opacity of the *entire document*.  This does not seem right and I only want to change the opacity of the rectangle.

All pictures in the document are rgb jpegs.  

Attached is a screenshot.

What is wrong?

well.....there is nothing wrong in your screenshot, its looking like it should.
i can see the image with the transparent white block on top of it, the image has no transparency.

Hi,

No, there is something wrong in my screenshot - I might not be explaining the problem correctly.

Problem: When changing the opacity of a selected object, *all* objects are affected (not just the selected object).

This happens even if the selected object is on its own layer.

so when you apply 50% transperancy to that white box
and then select the image, its transperancy is set to 50% too?

I do it in this order:  I first select the white box, then go to the transparency tool and set opacity to 50%. When I apply that change, all transparencies (the white box, background, any other images) *all* change at the same time.

I have also re-set the Preferences folder, but that did not correct the problem.

I fixed this problem by enabling Edit-->Transparency Blend Space-->Document RGB.
