Do have Photoshop? I would size the images correctly in Photoshop via the Image Processor script. The handiest way is to use Bridge to assemble all the graphics you're needing and then (still in Bridge) go to Tools/Photoshop/Image Processor. You can output as JPG/PSD/TIFF and resize to fit your required dimensions.

When you import an image into a frame and it doesn't fit correctly there are 5 fitting options; I tend to work with the fitting option called Fill Frame Proportionally; You will see the fitting options by selecting any image frame and either right clicking it or choosing the Object menu > Fitting command > Fill frame proprtionally; Now locate the object style panel; If you don't see it on the right select the Window menu > Object styles command; At the bottom of the object styles panel, ALT click the post-it/sticky to create a new object style and set options; On the left side, locate frame fitting options; Where it says Fitting on Empty Frame: None, change none to Fill Frame Proportionally and click OK. Finally, before importing your XML, tag each frame with the new object style (which you can rename). Use the black selection tool to select the frames that get images, and click on the object style 1 on the object style panel to apply it. HTH
