I've done some research over the last few hours, and the 'standard' tool for converting Quark to InDesign is "Markztools Q2ID" The project is big enough to justify the $200 purchase price of the software but only if it successfully converts the file! Anyone have experience with this problem, if so, does the Markztools plug in actually work as advertised? I've heard from my mac-based friends that it works great on mac quark to mac indesign, but my concern is windows quark to mac indesign. (Sorry to repeat the question, but I want my concerns to be as clear as possible...)
Thanks!

I haven't tried your path, but highly recommend Markzwarz; I've heard that the translation is imperfect, and you can count on font-mapping issues. For 1 time use, not worth $200, but if you do lots of docs then worthwhile. Don't know that you have other options.

If they won't offer you a guarantee, ask them to show you a demo using your data; If they lie and say can't do tell them it's a shame they'll pass up your purchase of 10 licenses (exaggerating helps)
