How do I create bleeds in a press quality pdf when the bleed background is colored

Asked by TekkyNotTacky in Adobe Acrobat, Adobe InDesign Publishing Software, Adobe Creative Suite

I am using an old version of Adobe Acrobat (5) and created a page with bleeds in IndDesign.
When I tried to use the tools in Acrobat to indicate that the black background bleeds all four sides (1/4 in),
the bleed marks came up, but the background color stopped at the trim size, leaving the bleed area
white. What is going on here? I did a workaround by creating the bleeds in my native file and then using crop marks to show the trim. This reproduced in the pdf. Is there a better way?
