How can I resolve output problems with drop shadows in spot colour?

I have created a 3 spot colour document in Quark Xpress 7. I have added a 'glow' to the type headline using the drop shadow feature which looks very nice on screen and when I convert to lo res pdf in cmyk format. However, when outputting to hi-res pdf for separation in spot colors the whole thing falls down. Although a pdf is produced the type appears as a scrambled mess?!? ....So any ideas on what might be happening here? I think its worth mentioning the type is on a background colour which fades.
