Your login information is incorrect.  You have to provide a valid username and password.

by: seippgPosted on 2008-12-15 at 08:41:49ID: 23175091

One other thing.  You may have to change a configuration in the db.  You may have to enable Mixed Mode (Windows Authentication and SQL Server Authentication).  In either Enterprise Manager or SQL Server Management Studio, right click on the server name, select properties and then click the Security tab.

I have...   It was working fine until Wednesday.   We never changed anything on the server.

by: seippgPosted on 2008-12-15 at 08:48:37ID: 23175170

Hmmm...well, it's an authentication problem...not a connectivity problem.  That's the good news.  Also, 1) check to make sure the server is running 2) try logging on with that ID with either Enterprise Manager or SQL Server Management Studio.  The password for that ID may have expired.

Just checked.   sa gets in just fine.   But when any other user tries to setup an ODBC connection to the database.   They get the 18452 error.

If you have access to the server... Can you open the log file?  It's usually C:\Program Files\Microsoft SQL Server\MsSQL.1\MsSQL\Log\ERRORLOG.  See if you see any lines like:

Logon Error: 18452, Severity: 14, State: 1.  The state indicates the error:

1 Invalid User Account
2 Invalid User Account
5 Invalid User Account
6 Windows Login was used instead of SQL Authentication
7 User Disabled with an incorrect password
8 Incorrect Password
9 Incorrect password
11 Internal Server error
12 Internal Server error
13 SQL Service paused or stopped
18 Password change required

I just looked through log and found nothing like what's up above.   Everything looks normal.   I created a brand new user and he gets the same 18452 error.

Try this test.
1) Login to the Windows Server and open a cmd window.
2) Open a cmd window
3) CD to C:\Program Files\Microsoft SQL Server\90\Tools\Binn>
4) run osql -U <userid>

Let me know what you find out.

by: silentdawgPosted on 2008-12-15 at 09:25:36ID: 23175609

I may have had a brain f@rt or something but...  here is what i got.

C:\Program Files\Microsoft SQL Server\80\Tools\Binn>osql -U princem
Password:
Login failed for user 'mincem'.

C:\Program Files\Microsoft SQL Server\80\Tools\Binn>osql -U grimmc
Password:
Login failed for user 'grimmc'.

by: seippgPosted on 2008-12-15 at 09:28:35ID: 23175658

Just to be sure...try it again specifying the server name ... sorry...should have mentioned it before:

osql -S <server> -U <username>

by: silentdawgPosted on 2008-12-15 at 09:34:30ID: 23175742

same result...

by: seippgPosted on 2008-12-15 at 09:40:31ID: 23175799

Well, you can try logging in with SQL Server Studio Management Studio (on the Windows Server) with those IDs as well.  If that doesn't work then you need to log in as sa and find out what's wrong with them...maybe start by resetting the passwords?

by: silentdawgPosted on 2008-12-15 at 09:42:29ID: 23175814

reset the windows passwords?  Or another password.

by: seippgPosted on 2008-12-15 at 09:54:47ID: 23175936

Are you using integrated security?  If you are using Integrated security for the user then you shouldn't need to change their password (...but...hmmm...do you guys using expiring passwords in your domain?  They should have been prompted to add new credentials if their logins had expired...).  Also, if the ID you logged in as on the server has access to the server, then try

osql -E

to see if the integrated security is working right.

by: seippgPosted on 2008-12-15 at 13:02:49ID: 23177774

Did you find out what the issue was?  Sorry, I'm just curious.

by: silentdawgPosted on 2008-12-15 at 13:16:34ID: 23177927

Yes sir it is fix.   I used the SQL Server Mgmt Studio.   I added all users as new users and it worked.  THANK YOU FOR ALL OF YOUR HELP!!!

by: seippgPosted on 2008-12-15 at 13:18:26ID: 23177949

Wow.  I guess something happened to the IDs then.  I guess you probably know more about SQL Server security than you ever wanted to know.  :)  Best of luck.
