Is it possible to install/run a program on an External HD and run it from multiple computers with XP installed?

Good Day Experts,

I heard a rumor that it is possible to install a program(autoCAD in my case) on an External Hard drive and then have the ability to close the program, remove the hard drive, and run it from another computer that you swap the External Hard Drive with as long as, both computers have windows XP installed.  Is there some kind of application that allows this?  Virtual Player or VMachine maybe?
