Question

Solid Freezes Every 40 seconds

Asked by: gatesandsons

We currently have a laptop that has solidworks 2008 installed on it.  Every time we lanch the program and start editing somthing it will freeze every 40 seconds or so.  Sometimes we can unfreeze it other times we have to restart the program.  It starts freezing every time the user clicks on somthing.  To me this sounds like a possible memory issue.  If someone has some insight it would be much appreciated.

Sounds more like a Video Card issue.
Had solidworks ever worked properly on the laptop before?  perhaps update to the newest video card drivers to make sure it isnt a video card issue. often times, 3d graphic programs like solidworks freeze due to video card compatability issues.

by: gatesandsonsPosted on 2008-04-21 at 13:37:02ID: 21405754

We wiped it awhile back because of the same issue thinking perhaps that was the problem.  Funny thing is that it used to work with the previous install until a certian point.  Also we have a quadro FX350 however this is a dell laptop and it seems everytime i download graphics drivers they won't work from the nvidia site.  Perhaps i am downloading the wrong one?  Perhaps dell has the graphics update.

by: kepper80Posted on 2008-04-21 at 13:43:53ID: 21405825

always check the drivers provided by the system manufacturer before you go directly to the maker of the part. in this case, download the recent drivers from dell and install.
also, Im assuming you have enough RAM in the system to support the installation..
other thought: how many parts in the assembly?

by: gatesandsonsPosted on 2008-04-21 at 13:49:16ID: 21405873

The item has around 100  - 150 parts in it.  The Machine has 2 gigs of ram so that should be enough for general drawings.  I was monitoring the CPU and RAM usage and they are no where near full levels maybe 50 percent for the CPU and 40 for the ram for short bursts but not enough to cause freezing.  If it's not a driver problem could it be a video card problem hardware wise?  Cause I downloaded the most recent drivers from dell when I installed the laptop perhaps month and a half ago?  Perhaps it was installed incorrectly?

by: kepper80Posted on 2008-04-21 at 13:57:04ID: 21405955

hard to incorrectly install those updated drivers..
have you tried a full uninstall / reinstall of Solid Works?

is it a full computer lockup? or just a crash of solidworks. (i.e. can you end the solidworks process and still use explorer?)

by: gatesandsonsPosted on 2008-04-21 at 13:59:09ID: 21405975

It says that solid works is not responding if i click out and then back into solidworks *dual monitors, click on desktop then solidworks again*.  If I go to Task manager it says the program is not responding.  It's never crashed the whole computer.

by: kepper80Posted on 2008-04-21 at 14:01:40ID: 21406002

interesting. and you say you are accessing your drawing over the network ?
try and copy one of the files locally and open it from there, see if you experience the same problem, it could be a networking issue and not an acual issue with soldworks at all.

Same problem... already tried that.

hmm after researching some, It may be caused by corrupted shadows in Dual mode (having to do with your quadro card)
there is an unofficial whql patch for the vid card that you might try.
see
Quadro WHQL driver dated September 21 supporting 144 GPU's.

This driver is recommended to any users having problems with the nVidia control panel not responding.

Definitley sounds Graphics driver related.

For WInXP, the latest SW2008 certified driver for a FX350 card is 6.14.11.6265.
I'm assuming its WinXP because its the only OS listed on the SW website for a M60 laptop.

With that being said, SW certified drivers are also "computer make" dependent and according to the SW website, there are no certified drivers for a FX350 card when installed in a Dell Precision M60.

One other note on the 6.14.11.6265 driver, the SW website has a footnote saying you need to use the video card settings for SW
