Question

Solidworks - OLE objects like Excel not displaying on some computers but displaying on others.

Asked by: AndrewEckstrom

We have Solidworks files that have embedded OLE objects like Excel tables that won't display when opened on three of our computers but do display when opened on another two computers.  When browsing to find the Solidworks file you can see the tables in the preview but once the drawing is opened then the tables are gone.  If I open a Solidworks drawing and the tables are not displayed and I then saving the drawing all of the tables are removed from the drawing even for the computers that can see the OLE objects.
All computers are Windows XP Pro 64bit
Solidworks Office Professional 2006 x64 SP5.1
Office 2002 SP3

Thanks for any help.

I'd suspect a Microsoft problem. Try running an Office update on the problem systems.

..and an OS update as well.

I was able to find the cause of this issue.
We also use MS Outlook 2007 for email on our Exchange server.  When Outlook was updated, Office 2007 SP1 was installed.  Along with the service pack came many new Office 2007 file extensions.  I don't know how Solidworks calls the embedded OLE object such as Excel but after the service pack was applied the OLE objects were no longer visable.  If I removed the service pack then I could see the objects again.  My guess is that Office 2007 SP1 added some code to make Excel 2007 the default Excel program.  Solidworks then tried to open the drawings with a version of Excel that did not exist.

Thanks for the update Andrew. Might want to try repairing Solidworks after the office SP1 is installed and see if that fixes Solidworks so it knows what Excel version is installed.
