Adobe Illustrator: How to break apart an object (say a rectangle) into two separate objects by using an existing path (not close path) that intersects the rectangle fully (side to side).
Think if the side of an aquarium and there's a wavy water line thru it. I want a top "half" and a bottom "Half"
I found Pathfinder menu, but i have to extend the intersecting wavy line to be a closed path, and then do it twice, awkwardly, once for the upper half and then for the bottom half.
I'd like something like the knife tool but using a given path.

You need the "Divide" command. You might end up with a couple extra objects you need to delete, but that's what you want. If I remember right it's close to the lower left on the pathfinder panel, though that may depend on your version.
