Illustrator CS3 crashes when attempting to save files

Using Illustrator CS3, on Windows XP Service Pack 2,  I have been unable to save any of my drawings recently. The problem occurs after I've selected a filename, format and destination. Clicking the "Save" button forces the program to terminate, right before the additional save options dialog is supposed to appear. I have reinstalled Illustrator to no avail.
