Outer glow on black background shows in grayscale

I'm using Illustrator CS3 and have created two layers - one with a bigger rectangle with a black fill, and one with a smaller rounded corners rectangle over the first one, with a color gradient. I then go to Effect > Stylize > Outer Glow, but when I select a color for the glow, it shows in grayscale over the big black rectangle. Can't figure out what I'm not accounting for... Tried Edit > Edit Colors > Convert to CMYK, but that doesn't help... Just want to have a nice glowing color blending into that black...

hide the black rectangle layer and see if the glow is still grayscale.
This will help narrow down where to look.
It the colour returns, then it may be a blending option on the layer, or opacity.

Hi

You need to check what overlay options you have for that colour, default is screen at 75% opacity (which should be fine on black). First check if you have accidentally changed this, ikt is easily done especially if you have a wheely mouse.

If you change this to Normal and 100% what do you get?

nevermind, sometimes you'd just have to drag the color somewhere and change it...
