i will not recommend to use Photoshop for such purposes
the best deal is to trace out the baseball shape in Illustrator and then place the image behing the shape, and then apply clipping mask to fit the image in this shape.
then you give either a stroke or brush effects to the shape to make it more effective.
In Illustrator CS2, you can even use the Live Trace feature to trace the baseball vector shape out if its jpeg.

Depends on the look that you are going for, but I might take the jpeg image of the baseball into Illustrator and trace it with the pen tool, then you could copy and paste that into a new Photoshop document and place the picture you want over it. Or you could use a "Vectorization" application such as this one -> http://vectormagic.com/ to turn the baseball jpeg into a vector image you can take into photoshop or manipulate further in Illustrator.
