Thank you! That's exactly what I needed to be able to do!
I saw something about clipping, but wasn't sure what it would do.

Browse All TopicsI am very new to using Adobe Illustrator and am trying to do what I think should be an easy task. I would like to make a rectangular selection area around an area of a state map that shows various counties and then be able to scale that selection larger -- like you see enlarged insets from maps for more detailed information about a small area.
How can I do this with an EPS vector file of a map that has 100 different counties (and county names) in the image file?
I'm basically wanting to create a rectangular selection of a cluster of counties and only scale that particular region on the map.
Thanks in advance for your help!

Hi
the simplest way to do this would be to copy the map, clip the section and scale that.
1. Select map and copy (Ctrl+C => Ctrl+V)
2. Draw the rectangle and position over the spot on the map you want to enlarge. It does not matter what design the box is.
3. Once positioned in place press Ctrl+7. This will clip all that is outside the box and the box design is now transparent.
4. You can now scale it to size and manipulate it separately from the map
