associate string to movieclip variable as3.  new eval?

Tags: Adobe, Flash, CS3, Actionscript 3.0
I have a number of custom movie clips created in a movie clip ( separate buildings on a map).

Each of these buildings has a variable name assigned too it , b001, b002 etc.

I am loading a XML file that has data for each property and a associated building ID  ( ie id="001");

I am loading these items in and associating the name of each property to list, but I am also trying to link the additional data loaded  to the movieclip variable so i can add event listeners to each object and associate the data to it as well.

// Passing a id to the function when clicking item in the list
function getBuilding(e:ListEvent):void{
	var id:String = "map.mapVector.mapVectorBuildings.b" + e.item.id;
	trace(id); // traces the path properly
	[id]alpha = 0; // does not affect the movieclip (throws an error)
}

// function to add event listeners to the object
function setBuilding(buildingId:String):void{
	// once again passes the id properly
        var id:String = "map.mapVector.mapVectorBuildings.b" + buildingId;
        //doesnt seem to be associating the event listener properly ( i think its adding it to root even)
	[id]addEventListener(MouseEvent.MOUSE_OVER, buildingOver);
}

function buildingOver(e:MouseEvent):void{
        // you can see the event is targeting nothing
	trace("clicked " + e.currentTarget);
}

The Solution Rating System

With so many solutions, how can you tell which solutions are most likely to help you and which ones are not? To provide you with a tool to use, we rate our solutions based on various elements that most accurately determine if a solution is a quality solution. To explain what factors affect the solution rating, here are the elements we take into consideration when formulating our solution rating.

  • The Grade of the Solution
  • The Zone Rank of the Expert Providing the Solution
  • The Number of Author and Expert Comments
  • The Number of Experts Contributing
  • The Feedback of the Community

Your Input Matters
Because of the way the system is set up, the most important variable in this equation is you. As a member of Experts Exchange, you are able to cast your vote on the quality of the solutions in regard to how complete, accurate, helpful and easy to understand each solution is. When you provide your feedback, each rating is adjusted accordingly. So, if you see a solution that has a poor rating that you think is a good solution, let us know by rating it. As you do, the rating will be adjusted and will become more accurate for other members of our site.
