Thanks stevekorb - the reason I'm using Illustrator is because when I change the grayscale page to CMYK to drag or drop in various yellow bits, 4 channels show up and when you send this to a publication, you get charged for a 4 color ad rather than a 2 color. I would love to know how to accomplish this in Photoshop. Youy might do this with some sort of spot color but some of the yellow bits are pretty involved and work nicely created in Photoshop and Placed in Illustrator. By giving more contrast to the grayscale before adding it to Illustrator and Exporting thefinished page in tiff, and then using a bit more contrast, it has begun to look pretty good. That's the only reason I purchased Illustrator 2 years ago. I'd appreciate any other thoughts you have. Thanks for your help! cowlife

Can I ask why are you placing everything in Illustrator only to export back into Photoshop? are you re-drawing something and that's why you're using Illustrator? Photoshop will do what you're looking for, even allow for the creation of custom channels (which some printers prefer). When you place your items into Photoshop documents you get the option of adjusting the size and resolution before the item gets placed in the document. Might be what you're looking for to help with loss of quality. Try opening your psd file, then dragging and dropping your .eps or .ai file into it.
