well to get a similar result try tracing over this image first.
basically:
- place this image on the bottom layer.
-On the layer above use the pen tool to re-create the jagged torn effect.
- then you can colour in the two pieces to look like metal. Try different gradients of silver and use a radial gradient starting from the corner to try and simulate a lighting effect.
Not sure what else you would need too know. If i am missing anything just let me know
Frankly, I did not have in mind copying another's artwork; I sort of see that as plagiarism. I sent the file for the purpose of giving you an idea of the effect I am attempting to achieve. I was hoping you might suggest a tool within the program that can be used to capture that effect, not the exact shape, Thanks anyway.
Genome is showing you a method of creating artwork in Illustrator.
I could answer your question with another question, How well can you draw?
There is no magic tool to do what you want in illustrator. You have to draw it. Go to a scrapyard and take a photograph of a car that has ripped metal, then trace that. Then there are no copyright issues.

do you have an example (from google images or something) to get an idea? Metal is a slightly broad term seeing you could technically use plain silver with a gradient on it but would look a bit boring.
I wouldn't expect a photo realistic result either.
