Editing Layers when opening from JPG

The search utility is down so Im sorry if this has been answered a thousand times (at least its free points).

I have Photoshop 5.0LE. I have an image that was created in 5.0 (standard/pro edition?) that was saved as a JPG and I can't find the original photoshop file.

When I open the JPG in 5.0LE it only shows one layer (the background). In reality there should be 3 layers. Anyone know how to get the separate layers to show up again so I can edit them?

When you save as a JPEG you flatten the layers. Those layers are GONE and the only way to get them back is to find the original Photoshop file. JPEG files dont support layers which is why it gets flattened.

Update:

I found the original file on a backup. When I try to open it it says "The file contains a re-editable type. This is not supported by Photoshop Limited Edition. Discard and continue?"

A re-editable type suggests that I cannot edit any of the layers with the version I have correct? It allows me to rename a layer, but thats all that happens when I double click on a particular layer. Do I need to pick up a different version of photoshop?

"the file contains a re-editable type"...I think that means the file contains text you can re-edit but im not positive. Anyway your only choice is to discard and continue unless you update and use a newer version of Photoshop.

Yeah, I cant edit the layers I need to after I continue. Im grabbing a trial version of photoshop and I'll see what happens.

I'll close the question for you after I give it a try.

I picked up Photoshop6 and was able to edit the original photoshop file.

Looks like a good package, but its going to be easy to get lost in there. I'll be back.
