Haven't seen the ad. I dont think it ran in the states. If you can find a link to it on the apple site, post the url.

Just a guess but try using the posterize filter.

by: dearsinaPosted on 2003-04-30 at 12:09:52ID: 8430790

The ad most probably depicted a fake transition with a hand drawn cartoon. If you haven't had any luck with cutout or poster edges, there isn't much more to do, filter wise.

try using paths to trace where you want your lines and use stroke. then try using your filter/ or lower the color depth till it looks right...

by: BoonerPosted on 2003-05-08 at 04:25:43ID: 8487454

dear bigbitchjimmy

would what your looking for be a "warhol" type effect

if so use the image/adjust/posterize command to reduce the picture to about 7-10 levels or so

then go to filters/artistic/cutout

hope that helps

hey jimmy,
maybe this can help-

1. Load your imag into photoshop
2. Change it to grayscale (Image-Mode-Grayscale)
3. Click yes to discard color info
4. Run a Filter-Blur-SmartBlur using the following params
  radius 10
  threshold 25
  quality high
  mode edge-only
5. adjust the sliders on an image-to-image basis to make the lines clear
6. hit ok
7. image-adjustments-invert
8. convert the image to rgb (image-mode-rgb color)
9. use the paintbucket tool to color it

check out a before and after picture of an example i put together:

I think the effect you're talking about is called liuqify.  It's new as of photoshop 6.0 I think.  But it'll put down a mesh grid over your image and you can alter the vector mesh with diffrent tools creating "big nose" or "little eyes" etc by squezing and pulling and ... other adjectives.  But woudn't it be ironic if it was only on the PC version.

In photoshop 7 it's Filter > Liquify
In photoshop 6 I think it's image > adjust > lquify   - or somthing equealy as baffaling

-Coolhand2120

by: weedPosted on 2003-05-19 at 22:11:48ID: 8548478

Liquify has nothing to do with cartooning. It's just for warping images, not creating cartoons. And Photoshop for Mac and PC are identical in features. There is no difference between the two. There are no features that exist in one, and not the other.

by: Coolhand2120Posted on 2003-05-20 at 10:07:11ID: 8552071

No one is sure what he means by "cartooning".  It looks like quite a few things were suggested but not liquefy.  If you use liquefy properly you can make things look very "cartoonish".

Example: http://4.3.218.204:8081/wierdkid.jpg

Sorry weed, I know they(photoshops) are the same.
I just said it would be ironic if the thing apple advertised wasn't in the mac version, not trying to insult anyone.

Generally 'cartoon' means colorized line art. Almost posterized, simplified, and usually solid color chunks.

by: cheekPosted on 2003-06-02 at 18:41:16ID: 8634495

You could also get a similar effect by tracing it into vector.... Flash has a pretty good vector trace, if you have flash.

by: Royal_InkPosted on 2003-06-05 at 14:10:59ID: 8660897

Weed and cheek are correct. The best results is going to involve artistic skills and a vector app (Illustrator).

Here is an interesting article from The Screen Saver Television Show about a Caracature Artist.  I belive he uses a Tablet, and many layers.  Good Luck.

I've had some success using a combination of filters for a quick cartoon effect. The idea is to overlay a hard, dark outline layer over a simplified colour image. For best results, cut the face out onto a transparent layer first.

• Duplicate your original layer.

• Run Filter > Sketch > Photocopy. Adjust the settings to get a high-contrast outline of the important parts of the face.

• Set the layer blending mode to 'Multiply' or 'Colour Burn', to show the dark outlines over the original image.

• Select the original layer. If removed the background around the face, select 'Preserve Transparency'

• Use blur filters to soften and simplify the colours of the face. Running 'Gaussian blur', then 'Smart Blur' seems to work well.

• Often, using Hue/Saturation to over-saturate or lighten the skin tones works well.

By now, you should have something reasonably cartoony. For an additional effect, try these next:

• Convert the image to LAB mode (flatten the image first, or as you convert)

• Select the 'Lightness' channel.

• Run the 'Unsharp Mask' filter with very high 'amount' and 'radius' settings to create harder edges to your image.

Of course, a method like this is no substitute for a hand-drawn cartoon, but can work well if you've got a lot of images to do, or just need a quick effect.

the best approach is to redraw them as a Caricature, Ive done it with dozens of people, you get some good money for doing it too :)
