Question

How to Swap Colors in Photoshop?

Asked by: hhinman

I have a simple one color graphic logo on a transparent background in a .PSD file. It is currently black. I would like ot change the color to White so it can be layed on dark surfaces in other works. Is there a way in photoshop to give it a current color sample (e.g. with the eyedropper tool) and tell it to find this color everywhere in the current image and change it to another color?
  I tried using the magic wand and can't select just the grahic. I tried simply seeting the forgound color to white and using the paint bucket, but it also colored the entire transparent background. Thanks  Much for any suggestions.

Try from the main menu:
    "Select -> Color Range"

If the logo is a single color (black) on a transparent background as you described, using the Magic Wand with a low tolerance value (<30) and the Contiguous option (on the Property Bar) not selected, should work.  With these settings, just click anywhere on the logo, and all areas should be selected.  Once the selection is successfully made, you then need to fill it with your chosen color: you can use the Edit>Fill command and choose white (in the Use option in the Fill dialog that appears).  The key is to get the selection right, otherwise the colour wil fill the entire canvas as you described.

Alternatively:
You can select the shape on any layer (that's not a Background layer) by right-clicking on the thumbnail for the desired layer in the  Layers Palette, the choose Select Layer Transparency.  The will create a selection that perfectly fits any shape on the layer, regardless of color.  The Magic Wand on the other hand will only work effectively with solid or near solid single colors.  After the selection is made, the steps to fill are the same as above.

There are other tools that allow you to select a color range based on samplings with the eyedropper tool, but that will not be necessary with scenario that you described.

Hope this helps :-)

Hi hhinman,

If you have Black on transparent and want to convert it to White... simply Ctrl-A to Select All and then go to Image>Adjustments>Invert (or hit Ctrl-I).  Can't get it any easier than that.

Good Vibes!

Like everyone has said there is more than one way to solve your prob, but to do what u wanted in your question, simply go(from the menu bar): Image->Adjustments->Replace Color, at the top of the window that pops up use the eye dropper to select the colour you want to replace. Then at the bottom of the window choose the colour you want to replace your selected colour with, either by adjusting the Hue, Saturation, Lightness, or by clicking on the colour box. Use the slider above the small selection representaion of your image, called fuzziness, to adjust hte tolerance of the replace operation. Thats it. For complex images you will need to do some tidying up, and there are probably better methods, but for simple flat images/colours this is a useful, quick option.
