Question

What size should i design my website? (pixel size)

Asked by: MiamiDolphins

Hey there

quick question really

im really struggling with getting all the information in need on a 800 x 600 display website

i still get about 15% of users that use 800 x 600 displays to view my website so i still want to cater for them

but my question really is this

1. what size should i design the website if i want it to fit a resolution of 1024 x 768 (taking into account scroll bars etc)
2. same question again for 800 x 600 display (should it be 750 pixels width)?

thanks again guys

i will just use some scripting to redirect users to one of the two websites (gonna create the same size twice with 2 different resolutions)

Hi, MiamiDolphins,

1024 x 768 - I would size at 975-980 x 620-625
800 x 600 - I would size at 775 x 475

This based on those screen sizes and IE 6 (and Windows Taskbar at the bottom...but some people place at the sides).  Notice you lose a lot vertically as IE uses several lines at the top and then there's the status bar at the bottom.  On the sides, though, there isonly one scroll bar to deal with.

Not sure what other browsers take away in screen real estate but IE probably takes the mose (LOL).

Hope this helps.  The sizes you use will largely be what you feel comfortable with as there is no ironclad rule.

Regards,
Slynky

not sure i want to lose so much with the vertical as i expect scrolling and dont really want to force the site to fit 'flush' on a website

its a dynamic website so expect it to content alot of information at times so scrolling is needed so maybe just keeping vertical at 768 or 600 is okay right?

MiamiDolphins,

IF I were going to use (or plan for) scrolling in MY website, at least vertical scrolling is the most comfortable (a lot of people have their finger near the wheel and use it to scroll).  I hate sideways scrolling, though!  So, you would not bother me too much (smile).

But, I hear what you are saying about the vertical size.  A lot gets used up by IE.

MiamiDolphins,

If you were really good at HTML (etc.), you could build your site in such a way that it never needed scrolling and would calculate on the fly the size the pages needed to be (and just generate "page 2" if there were overruns).  Of course, then you're clicking to get to the next page instead of scrolling down and up (smile).

Good luck either way!

MiamiDolphins,

Oh, and here I am again (sorry).  It just occurred to me that this question really isn't in the best of topic areas so you might wait around a bit and see if some other experts will give some advice.   I know there are several who are well-versed in this area.  I prefer you get an answer you are happy with rather than me getting points.

Cheers!
