Question

Photoshop Actions and Batch

Asked by: happinessman

Hi,

I am using Photoshop 7.

I need to do some simple resizing actions on a lot of images from many different folders. I have setup and recorded actions to resize and save the images using the 'Save for Web'. I have then srun this set of actions using the Batch option. This works fine apart from one thing. If I try to use the Batch option and the action set I have created but for a different folder, the following occurs . . .

1) The image Source folder set in the Batch window works fine. All images are opened from the folder I have chosen in the Batch window.

2) However, whatever Destination folder I choose in the Batch Window, when the images are saved, they always go to the folder I originally chose when recording my Actions. i.e. the Destination folder I select in the Batch window has no effect on where the images are actually saved.

I have 'Override Action "Save As" Commands' checked and therefore thought that this must be the cause of the problem. I need this to be checked as I don't want to confirm every image save proceedure but want Photoshop to do the actions and save the optimized images automatically through the whole folder without any interaction from the user. So, to remedy this, I thought that I should try recording the actions again, but excluding the final click of the Save button in the Save for Web window. This also didn't work as then I found that the images did not save at all.

My basic question is therefore this . . .

How do I create a set of Actions which I can use to resize, optimize and save images for the web for any folder which will save to any other folder chosen in the Batch window? Please remember I want Photoshop to complete the whole process including saving the images without any user interaction.

Hope that makes sense. Any questions, please ask.

Thank you :o)

Hello!

Well, that has happened to me lots of times. All of them I changed something in the file name (or location) when Saving For Web when recording the action.
Try opening the action, deleting the save for web step, and then start recording again (with a image opened, of course). Then, go to save for web and make the settings you need in the image output, etc. So, click save, and save again, AND DO NOT ALTER ANYTHING IN THE FILE NAME OR LOCATION. This makes Photoshop understand that the image must not be saved on a specific location (what happens when you change save for web's file name), but save with the name of the original image in the folder specified in the Batch dialog instead.

Hope it works! Best Wishes,

Rafael Almeida

Hi happy,

I think the problem is that when you choose destination: 'Folder' in the Batch setup, you're effectively telling Photoshop to save the file via the 'File -> Save As' system (not through 'Save for web' as is recorded in your action.

When you select destination: 'Folder', the save happens after all the other steps in the action have completed. If you select destination: 'None' you're relying on whatever save/export/save for web options are recorded in the action itself. Of course, 'Save for Web' records any folder name you've given it as an absolute path, so as you found, all the images go into the original folder you used when building the action.

A way to deal with this is to use two actions: One action to perform the resize, and set the destination to 'folder' you want when you run the batch.  Once the batch is complete, run a second 'Save for web' action on the new folder to optimize them. As Rafael said, don't change the folder or path in the 'Save for web...' setup when you record the action - Photoshop will save the file wherever it came from.

Let us know if this helps, or if you need more info.

Good luck!
